The koala strike

This is a proposal for a koala strike. For as long as the Albanese government continues to approve fossil fuel projects, there should be a ban on ministers entering zoos and animal parks for photo opportunities. If the government insists on contributing to catastrophic climate change, it should not benefit from the positive feelings people have towards the animals and environments it is destroying.

@steveirons

I've never seen a scientific reference to the suggestion that we should have no new coal mines, have you?

I'd have thought that if we closed the larger brown coal mines then we could still reduce overall emissions while opening new efficient black coal mines.

No new oil, gas or coal development if world is to reach net zero by 2050, says world energy body

Governments must close gap between net zero rhetoric and reality, says International Energy Agency head

Net Zero by 2050 - Analysis and key findings. A report by the International Energy Agency.

IEA
@Neil1808 Reading the #NZE model: Meeting targets are assumed to be achieved. No new coal mines or extensions of existing ones are needed as coal demand declines precipitously. For coking coal existing sources of production are sufficient to cover demand through to 2050. Upstream oil and gas investment is similar to the level in 2020, but around 30% lower than average levels during the previous five years.

@steveirons

Existing sources may well be sufficient for demand to 2050 but they may not be the optimal deposits to mine.

The decision on where to source the coal should depend on the total emissions they cause & the cost not the age of the mine.

Mines become less efficient as they age & deeper coal is extracted so it may be better for the #climate to close one mine & open a new one.

@Neil1808 You may well be right in particular projects but that is not what science has been saying. They've been saying it's time to close down existing & not open new 😜
