@arstechnica wow. The implications are massive for hand-held 2-way satellite comms. It's just SMS at the moment. But bandwidth improvement is just a matter of time. We will see potentially see the beginning of the end for the great firewall of China, and other regimes where the state tightly controls information/data infrastructure.

Good point. The piece mentions US-based "#Skylo" as the operator with connectivity supposedly provided by ol' #Inmarsat, so not a #PRC (#CCP) venture after all.

Interesting to see how CCP plans to keep these new satellite-based comms out of its subjects' reach.
