If you’re new to the #Fediverse, let me give you a tip, and some freedom: no one gives a shit how many people you follow. Metrics don’t matter here. No one is keeping score. Post good content. Be a good human. Or just hang out and enjoy good content and good humans. Follow people to get good content. Follow as many people as are sharing interesting content, because that’s how content gets into your feed. 😇 You are free to be.

I was adding an additional post because I ran out of space to say it sufficiently when I was scooped by the comments because I had to edit the post like twenty times to correct typos and add hashtags (because that’s how search works, so that it is opt-in and not mandatory), and then I ran out of space, but yes, editing is free!

Y’all. There are still people using Twitter. We should send them our love because lawd I personally know how they are suffering, even if they do not. 😭

@chancerydaily You totally buried the lede. FREE EDIT BUTTON Y'ALL!
@chancerydaily Just joined from Twitter and I'm still so confused how this whole website works

@Knz

It is so confusing at first. There are a million apps for UI. There is so much customization, it took me months to get comfortable. But that’s because you can have it however you want it, it’s not being forced on you one particular way. Which is amazing and daunting, to find how you want it. I suggest trying many apps early and often. @ivory @tootapp @IceCubesApp @MetaText are my favs for iOS and @elk is the most beautiful for desktop, hands down.

@chancerydaily

https://phanpy.social/ is quite nice as well, and does some really unique things. I’d love to see its boost carousel come to the stock web app, for example.

@Knz @ivory @tootapp @IceCubesApp @MetaText @elk

What is so glorious for those of you just joining now is how much innovation has taken place here, without the drive of advertiser or data mining dollars, in just the space of a handful of months. It’s been so inspiring to watch a truly vibrant and authentic development community work. It’s enough to make you believe in humanity again, which—to be fair, after last year—was a tall order.

@chancerydaily https://alpha.trunks.social/ is another one for your list of things to try. One of its standout features for me is that it makes it very easy to scroll your timeline by either boosts or posts. Turns out that its sometimes surprisingly nice to only read all the boosts. Its like reading an algorithmic suggested timeline, but theres no algorithm and all the posts are things I actually want to see.
trunks.social

A cross platform mastodon client. Available on Android, iOS, Mac and Web.

@chancerydaily @Knz With infinite flexibility comes infinite complexity. Give it time--we're all still learning.
@chancerydaily @Knz @ivory @tootapp @IceCubesApp @MetaText @elk Mastodon feels like the Linux of social media: infinitely customizable for your specific needs and interests.
@Knz @chancerydaily After about 4 hours using, I can say with some confidence: go to Elk (elk.zone). Very Twitter-like interface. I, too, found the base interface a bit overwhelming.
@itenginerd @Knz @chancerydaily Yeah, I second this. I have been using elk for a while now. Mastodon feels way more seamless and smooth after switching to it.
@vitorpy @itenginerd @Knz @chancerydaily Elk is really excellent, especially for an alpha. +1 for the UI being a cut above the default experience, especially for DMs on mobile.
@bw84 @itenginerd @Knz @chancerydaily The moment it adds WebPush it will be my default mobile client. Right not I’m still using Toot! on iOS and Elk on the desktop.
@vitorpy @bw84 @Knz @chancerydaily Yeah, I'm zero mobile, all desktop, so it's ideal for me.
@Knz @chancerydaily Follow people that look interesting. Comment on posts to get to know people. There is no algorithm. What you follow is what you get. Have fun. No one is keeping score and you don’t have to.
@chancerydaily It reminds me of fishing, or an Easter egg hunt; I keep snooping around for interesting folks, being my own algorithm. 4 months on, it's still fun.
@chancerydaily I particularly like people that share their own content. Not a huge fan of those that ONLY regurgitate, although sometimes they surface others worth following.

@chancerydaily The best comparison I can make is this:

You use Windows all your life
You're sitting in front of a Linux computer
You need to use apt-get for something
You can apt-get an apt-getter, and there's a bunch of them.
You can get a different flavor of Linux
You can do anything
Everything sort of works
Some things don't
You miss Windows
But you hate Microsoft

The Twitter to not-Twitter migration looks and feels similar to me

#MastodonVsTwitter #StrangerInAStrangeLand #IWantToGoHome

@jkimarobot @chancerydaily Not a bad comparison NOT A ROBOT. I use Windows as a desktop, but Linux for my home server. Living in multiple worlds...I don't use ANY MS Office products, but love LibreOffice. All the best to you.
@jkimarobot @chancerydaily I still want quote toots.
@annmlipton @jkimarobot we will get there, several apps have this functionality already
@chancerydaily As I've told everyone, just post good stuff and be nice and you will succeed here, or in other words "be excellent to each other, and party on."

@chancerydaily

Any continuing to drink at The Dying Parrot are there and stuck there because they are selling themselves, e.g. journalist drawing notice to latest article.

It is not difficult to see how they would be reluctant to move to The Trumping Mastodon because of the v. diff. connectability on offer.

Some have registered with an instance as well with a link to Parrot in the profile.

One well-known writer made a to-do about leaving to join Mastodon, has tooted once only.

@chancerydaily agreed, just wish we easier to understand or get actions to work , some will do once and never again...
@chancerydaily I kind of love the typo in your FediTips hashtag so that it's "Fedi Uncles" in Spanish instead
@drymifolia omg I know but then I corrected it, and then I was like but #FediTios is like a protectionist racket for the fediverse
@chancerydaily too bad it’s not easier to find people 😗 I was searching for someone yesterday who I follow on Twitter and I found 11 different instances of them, one of which was pending and the other 10 of which did not seem to be active. They all have different addresses! 🤷‍♀️
@LynJef there are about a dozen bot accounts that replicate all of Twitter that are making things a bit confusing. There’s a little symbol that shows up in some apps to show you which account those are, but it’s not always clear. I’m trying to find a way to clear that up.
@chancerydaily it is how it really should be, as Linux & FOSS generally is.
