People held the line against violent Proud Boys today in #SilverSpring, #Maryland. Even in the face of violence, people held strong against the fascists and the children's event inside a local bookstore was not disrupted.
@igd_news local news needs to start taking this seriously.
@igd_news and i mean this nationwide. there needs to be an expose, by local media, about this.
@mfreeman @igd_news The problem in America is that local news is dying and has been for a while. And in turn the “news deserts” are contributing greatly to democracy’s decline. https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2022/06/newspapers-close-decline-in-local-journalism/
As newspapers close, struggling communities are hit hardest by the decline in local journalism

The United States continues to lose newspapers at a rate of two a week, further dividing the nation into wealthier, faster growing communities with access to local news, and struggling areas without, according to a report on the state of local news from the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University.

@JenX @igd_news @mfreeman From reading on Next Door app, off and on, I wonder if people are creating their own echo chambers of ‘news’ on some of the social media options. Which is not good. Is there a suggested path by which an under employed educated journalist can build up their own employment? Sean did it with https://www.medcitybeat.com/#gsc.tab=0. Other examples? Hashtags?

Med City Beat
@SewHappy1960 @JenX @igd_news i mean i'm not a journalist nor am i a practicing doc anymore. i just have opinions which i will happily share in the form of words.

@mfreeman @JenX @igd_news

I'm a person with opinions as well so I respect this. And as I'm not coming forward as a trained, dedicated journalist, no one should just believe anything I say without vetting it. As JenX says, there are American news deserts. I feel these are being filled in by various social media conversations without the credibility of unbiased journalistic standards coming into play. In my town, the local Journalism School (w MU) fills in that gap. @CoMissourian is student-ran

@mfreeman @JenX @igd_news

Since we have this very active J-School in #ColumbiaMO, and we have another paper, we are not in a news desert. If you are, though, do you know if there is a trained or dedicated person filling in the gap in some way? Not necessarily speaking to the other people 'at'ed in the convo with me, but to anyone reading this. A great example is Twin City's based @bringmethenews.
