oil painting again for the first time in forever

had a rocky start

I blew it when layering the paint (oily, muddy baby-shit first layer, unpleasant), but today's layer was fun.

This is a work in progress. I enjoy watching art in progress as much if not more than looking at finished art, maybe you do too?

the story behind the series I'm doing will emerge as quickly as I can paint and dry some oil paintings.

so, glacial.

I'm still working on this painting and it is a little different now, I hope y'all didn't get too attached. My phone is broken but that's okay because I'm not ready to post a picture of the update yet.
In a way I wish I left it alone, but in another way I hope that what I communicate is more gentle, like a feufollet (or fifollet, or will o' the wisp, or swamp gas, or what do you prefer?) that has been roaming the woods, fascinated by places where trees have grown out of ancient city buses and factories, for the first time finds a machine that WORKS and she is rapt, waiting for it to hatch like an egg. In the updated painting she is looking at the viewer like "Do you see?"
It's weird looking at the earlier stage. It's like the painting is in it's underwear.

This is the most recent update, and it is still unfinished, but getting there. There is no photo of the version I was talking about yesterday but imagine a horrible mess and me looking at it and sighing.

I'm still working on it.

Letting the painting I've been working on rest a bit and starting something new.

this is my second oil painting this century, started with slightly more planning than the first one, along with a quick sketch I did to see if my pens were working. #OilPainting #sketch #Feufollet #Fifollet #art

work in progress, my second oil painting this century, underpainting

A feufollet, clothed in the remnants of forgotten worlds, walks through a forest that took an ancient refinery, and sings to a bird on her finger.

This is the most recent photo but the painting has progressed since it was taken. My son's camera is weird so I had to adjust the color and still didn't get it quite right, but this is close enough I guess. Can't wait to get my phone fixed.

Anyway, the painting looks a lot different now but I liked it at this stage because I figured out where it was going.

Still have some detail work to do, but this has been fun. Looking forward to painting a new one!

a forest spirit in the guise of a small child with horns and flowing gown, standing in an opening of a tree, singing to a bird on her finger. Behind the trees are the remains of a factory.

added bluebonnets.

One day I'll shake down tourists for all their money by painting bluebonnets on things.

I didn't give up on this one yet, by the way. This is from today, and I am trying to be very patient so it is properly dry before I start messing with everything again.

#wip #OilPainting #art #feufollet #robot

The robot has already been smeared back into the sphere bc it looked smug. It will have a cowboy hat, probably.

@#$% robot sphere ugh.

I like the feufollet's expression though. I hope practice makes me so good at this that it doesn't take 100 tries for me to like what I paint.

An ancient robot encased in a sphere stretches awake. The feufollet, clothed in ancient bones and wildflowers, stares and waits for it to hatch.

I think this has become a planning/wip thread. I did this on the other site because it was easier for me to track progress, but it becomes unwieldy after 10000 iterations of the same canvas. I'll figure out another way when I get some things finished (maybe a finished painting/storytelling thread, or general studio issues, or art references. who even knows!).

For now I'm dumping my art things on this thread.

The next canvas is primed and almost dry enough to paint. I'm thinking #ants this time.

In the meantime, I'm collecting dramatic ant scenes to study and would love suggestions if anyone has any.

I love image searching ants. So fascinating.

okay, sometimes I don't know what the robot looks like. Maybe it is a mystery! Maybe there never was a robot!

a feufollet, clothed in ancient bones, antlers, and flowers, contemplates a glowing orb, which may or may not contain a robot. oil painting on canvas, work in progress.

still painting when I have the energy, but I'm not photographing everything now because my phone is still broken. Three canvases ongoing, and I am happy with them, though I am annoyed that I can't plan a painting properly -- they just emerge, messy and helpless.

it is hard to think or do anything. I wait for doctor's appointments, I wait to hear about my long covid clinic referral, I'm broke and dependent on my spouse, my medical history is too limited to apply for aid.

I take vitamins, monitor blood pressure, go outside every day to get a little sun and move small things around in the yard, and try to read and paint, but mostly sleep. It got easier for a little bit, but now it is more difficult.

Anyway, please sign this petition.

"In March 2022, the U.S. Government Accountability Office estimated that 23 million Americans had developed Long COVID. Nearly a year later, studies suggest that number could be as high as 41 million. Yet there is no cure or treatment available."

Find a Cure For Long Covid, These Are Our Demands to HELP

Dear Friends, I wrote a letter for the Action Network letter campaign: Find a Cure For Long Covid, These Are Our Demands (U.S. Letter) to HELP The Senate HELP Committee is meeting Jan 18 for a hearing on Long Covid. In order to help all people with #LongCovid, LCAP is calling for a seat at the table to help draft meaningful legislation. Sign the letter and call the committee members. Let's demand LCAP members be included as key witnesses during this hearing and beyond. #DemandHELP

back to paintings, lol!

Here are the first and third oil paintings I did this century, still in progress because I'm a sleepy person and painting makes me swoon like a dying swan.

In a drawer blocked for years by spouse's musical instruments and his tower of boxes of comic books, I found my stash of oil paints from when I worked at the art supply store in the late 90's, and it's an overwhelming amount of palette knives, and tons of tubes of oils and mediums that I put away when we lived in a tiny box and my oldest daughter was toddling and putting things in her mouth.

They're in surprisingly great condition!

Now I have to learn how to paint for real.
