In the West, women have been largely under-represented in the psychedelic community as well as in scientific studies of this class of psychotropic drugs. Indeed, the caricatures of the female user in the media and in artistic productions (over-sexualised, sexually available), as well as the systematically health-oriented focus of studies on female psychoactive drug users, make it particularly difficult to identify and analyse female use of psychedelics.

Furthermore, the female researchers and therapists who took part in the first wave of studies on these products (1950-1970) have been invisibilised by the historiography (1,2).
This situation leads today to a lack of recognition of the contributions and scientific thinking of women on these substances (3), as well as a lack of knowledge of the needs (4) and specific experiences of women users (5).

As historian Erika Dyck explains, "the history of psychedelics has come to privilege male perspectives", distorting our understanding of these substances.

Noting the paucity of work that aims to question psychedelics from a gender perspective or seeks to study women's contributions and experiences in the field, we wish to offer a panel in this webinar that aims to fill this gap.

We will explore biases in academic knowledge related to women's use of psychedelics, highlight the historical and contemporary roles of women in the field of psychedelic studies, and question gendered practices related to substance use.
