Oh my. It has been a busy day. I need a touch of sci-fi and fantasy. Please share with me your favorite role playing game, video game, book or movie!

#ttrpg #sciFi #book #fantasy #movie #game #EscapeFromReality

@DMSCreations
This was delivered today. Haven't played since I was a teen.

@ash fantastic. Who will you be strolling down memory lane with?

I’m excited for you

@DMSCreations
Oh you'll love this: I'll be introducing the game to my love of 10 years (as of Valentine's Day) and who I'm marrying on the Solstice.
@ash oh!!! Congratulations!! That is fabulous news
@ash you made my whole night!
@DMSCreations I could reach back to some old school hard #SciFi but you might enjoy #doctorow #walkaway. Futurist but not magic level of tech so very relatable and socially very on point.
@chrisattwood oh I’ve never heard of that one either. Ill have to check it out. Rpg? Book or movie?

@DMSCreations Not _precisely_ fantasy, but I wrote two collections of translated German folk tales:

Books – Sunken Castles, Evil Poodles

@juergen_hubert fantastic. Im now following you on Amazon and the books are wishlisted. Thank you
@DMSCreations That reminds me - I should really add some text to my author page. 😅
@DMSCreations one of my current favorites is Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers.

@firdarrig i will definitely check that out.

I just bookmarked it on amazon and i noticed 2 things.
1) i am NOT getting the hardback lol
2) it comes in an audio format. I think im going to try this for my plane ride back home im march
Thank you

@DMSCreations Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West are games that were gorgeous and wonderful stories.
@ninjacooter video? Or ttrpg? Ill add them to my list and check them out
@DMSCreations Video. The entire series is fantastic and hopeful. I like that you spend most of your time helping people throughout various provinces.
@ninjacooter oh that sounds good. Thats the kind of games my daughter plays. Maybe we already have them in the house
@DMSCreations I actually cried a few times while playing. It's really beautiful.

@DMSCreations

I like to recommend Dianna Wynne Jones as an author of very inventive children's fantasy.

My favourite is 'The Lives of Christopher Chant', about a boy who has 9 lives and can travel to other worlds when he sleeps.

The best might be 'The Homeward Bounders' which features the trope of travelling from world to world trying to find the way home - maybe the original source? Content warning for existential dread - did we really read this as kids??

@LyallMorrison
“The lives of Christopher Chant” sounds very interesting
I’ll bookmark that one also. Thank you very much
@DMSCreations Oh, and I always forget that Dianna Wynne Jones wrote the book which was adapted as Miyazaki's film 'Howl's Moving Castle'!
@DMSCreations Video game: Disgaea 2, though 4 or 5 are better for new players. Avoid 6. It's trash. Movie: The Fifth Element. Likely you've seen that one. If you're open to an anime series, Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex.

@AM_PS4 i have never watched Anime at all. There’s so many i dont know where to start.
Technically thats not true i saw parts of one that was really violent. Akira? Maybe. Something like that.

Is Ghost in the Shell violent too?

@DMSCreations Akira is hyper violent. Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex is more normal levels of violence. It's counterterrorism in a transhumanist world, part mystery, part action, not brainless. Note that Ghost in the Shell is a much older movie with less action. You might prefer it! (Avoid the Hollywood live action version though.) I'm specifically recommending the series (Standalone Complex) though. The movie is definitely more high concept, but the series strikes a better balance.
@AM_PS4
great information thank you.
I will look at it.
Hubby wants to check out Anime and i have been balking - this is giving us a starting point
@DMSCreations https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Stand_Alone_Complex Note that it's pre-streaming, so I'm not sure how hard it would be to find. DVDs definitely existed prior to airing on Adult Swim, though.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Wikipedia

@AM_PS4 hmmm. Okay. Ill pass that on too. Thank you
@DMSCreations Since you said your husband was interested in trying anime but you were balking, I'll make one more recommendation that's a bit off of your original fantasy/sci-fi request, then leave you in peace: Cells at Work. It's a comedy dramatization of the work our bodies go through to keep us alive, at the cellular level. Expect lots of very real biology, with quick asides explaining as red blood cells rush oxygen around and platelets repair blood vessel damage.
@DMSCreations Violence is limited to white blood cells of various types versus bacteria. Available with English dubs or Japanese with subtitles. Streams on crunchyroll.com, which is a paid service, but a free trial is available.

@AM_PS4 oh. Cool. I sent it on to him! Thank you!

Please do not leave me in peace. I have been really enjoying all the suggestions and conversations from everyone

@DMSCreations recently read the fifth season and the dispossessed, both very good!

@garo thank you! Ill check them out and add them to my lists

This is fabulous!

@DMSCreations Top rank depends on the day, but for example I really love Naomi Novik's Temeraire series, starting with His Majesty's Dragon. The Napoleonic wars with dragons... which could have been an utterly terrible story idea but it absolutely soars; such good delineation of characters, and so engagingly written!
@dendroica oh sounds good. Im definitely adding that to my list
@DMSCreations that and Bujold's Vorkosigan books should keep ya going for at least a year or two.
@dendroica this series is wonderful. Thank you so much for the recommendation
@DMSCreations Oh you are very welcome! Glad you are enjoying it!
