If you are a person who is new to the fediverse, or whoโ€™s returning to explore after a while away, I can affirmatively say (as someone who has been here right from the start) that weโ€™re all glad to have you, and excited to see what you share, and inspired by the new ideas you have for whatโ€™s possible here.
@anildash weโ€™re glad your here.
@anildash Right up until the arguments about quote boosts start up again.
@anildash I was skeptical and then confused how to move from mushroom to the fediverse but ... it works, it's simple, and so far so good!
@anildash Also, cool people follow #mosstodon
@MHowell @anildash heck yeah, my timeline just improved dramatically ๐Ÿ˜Š
@anildash thank you and all users for being patient about my small but moving forward steps.
@anildash It's true ! Don't let the comedians scare you off. It's what we do...even if ya got some of that fascist goo on ya hangin round there..As long as it hasn't set regular detergent will take it out. No worries

@anildash this is a nice post and all but i can't help reading it like a Breencast
can someone ELI5 โ€œfediverseโ€?

@bv umm, I'll give it a shot:
Email is federated. Facebook & Twitter are centralized. If either goes down for good, ALL of the messages are gone and no new ones can be sent. If Gmail goes down a crap-ton of messages will be lost, many people will be in pain, but all the other mail servers will keep working. It won't be the end of email.

(Also: email is federated, anyone can keep an off-site copy of all messages easily. If Gmail disappears, just buy a new service and carry on.)

@bv with that in mind, the Fediverse is like email for microblogging. (Probably should have opened with that!)
@anildash How do we encourage people to find out which ideas are actually new?
@KevinMarks good question, let me ponder that!
@anildash Thanks for making us newbies feel at home. To quote Dorothy "Something tells me we're not in the Twitterverse anymore."
@anildash I just didnโ€™t post on twitter, too tiresome if a post got wide traction and the noise blew away the stuff I liked to view with overwhelming notifications etc. I think Mastodon is more personal and direct, and maybe avoiding trend storms. Certainly a higher signal to noise.
@anildash TY for the most warm welcome. I am learning something new each visi that helps me navigate. This chalenges me and hopefully keeps me young. Change does not come easily to us trifocaled, arthritic thumbed septagenerarians that have more doctors apts than luncheon dates. Love the diversity, the photography and the gentle kindness seen here.
@anildash thanks! I miss the people from Twitter, but it is still a nice place. I have started to use Instagram again, so I donโ€™t become completely asocial during my walk in the micro desert.
@anildash been trying to think how to welcome my friend @zoadeline to the party and this is the perfect message. Thanks for the great verbiage Anil!
@anildash going to shit on your parade here, but care to clarify your join date of "Jan 2023?" AFAIK the "beginning" of Mastodon was in the early 2010's. #notsorry #QuestionAndVerify
@Geekmaster thatโ€™s when I moved to this instance. Iโ€™ve been working on open technologies for the social web for 20+ years.
@anildash ohhhh gotcha! Good shit! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป
@anildash I am brand new here, an Episcopal Deacon in Michigan. I searched for Episcopal and you showed up.
@anildash if someone were to say the exact same thing on Twitter, I would know it was a trap or a bot. Thanks for the testimonial.
