Email is federated. Facebook & Twitter are centralized. If either goes down for good, ALL of the messages are gone and no new ones can be sent. If Gmail goes down a crap-ton of messages will be lost, many people will be in pain, but all the other mail servers will keep working. It won't be the end of email.
(Also: email is federated, anyone can keep an off-site copy of all messages easily. If Gmail disappears, just buy a new service and carry on.)
@bv with that in mind, the Fediverse is like email for microblogging. (Probably should have opened with that!)

Michael Skeggs@anildash I just didn’t post on twitter, too tiresome if a post got wide traction and the noise blew away the stuff I liked to view with overwhelming notifications etc. I think Mastodon is more personal and direct, and maybe avoiding trend storms. Certainly a higher signal to noise.

Change does not come easily to us trifocaled, arthritic thumbed septagenerarians that have more doctors apts than luncheon dates.
