Can someone recommend an app for logging any kind of event and then getting some statistics out of it? Example events:

- Walked the dog.
- Drank a cup of coffee.
- Felt a sore knee.
- Used dental floss.
- Saw a full moon.

After logging events over a period of time the app should be able to answer questions like "How often do I feel a sore knee?".

I don't want to use Shortcuts, Airtable, or similar. I'm looking for an all-in-one solution. My backup plan is using a calendar.

I’ve tried or otherwise researched all the suggestions in this thread and none really seem to match my needs. Most of these suggestions are habit trackers, mood trackers, or somehow involve building something on top of other tools. Most interesting suggestion is exist.io. I need to take it for a swing but it seems more focused on correlating data sources than what I’m looking for.

Either there’s close to no audience for an app like this or there’s a hole in the market.

Made a mockup of the app I wish existed. Users can long press on an event to track it. Each event shows a summary of how often it occurs. Tapping the event shows details.

Some graphs are blurred because I got lazy and didn't want to draw all of them.

Some screens are missing, obviously, but this is the gist of it to me.

@celebrion @simonbs Yeah, I was thinking Streaks too. But it's very tailored to tasks/habits you have to do and getting you an "award" for being on a streak. You can disable notifications, and probably make it work, but I don't think it'd work well for just tracking plain "events'. I'd be interested in something like Simons proposal.
@celebrion @simonbs Simon, if you're not aware of Streaks, this is what it looked like at some point I was trying to remember to take my vitamins :D
@simonbs I'd use the heck out of this app.

@matthewskiles @simonbs Great guys... This is almost exactly what I wanted to build once 😅 (and still wants basically)

... but I thought it would be too simple and there is so many apps lika that already 🤷‍♂️

@simonbs instead of a long press, could you have tiles a-la-shortcuts where tapping triggers the main action and there’s a button to view details? It could also be the other way around but I figure tracking is the main job?
@simonbs I’ve been looking for a project to enhance my swift skills. Might be fun!

@martind @simonbs how is that similar?
@mbuchetics @simonbs You are correct. I misunderstood the original intent. Not very similar.

@simonbs I’ve been wanting something similar, only change from what I can see is that I wanted it to draw from HealthKit.

So, if I had some heartburn or something, I’d mark that it occurred as you have. Then, it would try and see if there were any similar patterns within my health data which may correlate to it, ex: You’ve drank X mg of caffeine each this has occured, or are Y food, etc.

@jordanmorgan @simonbs A HealthKit correlation app just launched. It doesn’t do data entry.

@jordanmorgan this has been my white whale; an app I’ve planned exhaustively and partially started a few times. Just never worked out for various reasons, mostly because I was thinking far too big.
@jefframes well if you ever do make it, let me know!
@simonbs I do this kind of thing with Streaks
@simonbs I want correlation discovery; automatic data collection from many places (with easy options to add more on my own if possible) and a good sense of privacy.
Why does it have to be in the cloud if my phone can track all of this as well! Health data already is on my phone anyway! Because I want to feed it everything so it can generate interesting insights, I kinda don’t want some random company to have all that data about me :/ it’s probably a bit paranoid, but I would love auch an app!
Bonus points it it actually can keep me to give it manual tracking points. None of the apps so far had the right nagging / easy of use to do it. 🙃
@simonbs Obsidian (iOS version) with a combination of the Data Query plugin and daily notes?

@simonbs Would be a great idea for a more feature rich journaling app. Current ones let you add videos/photos and some search, but haven't found any that also track repeat events or actions.

You'd also want it to be automatic, sometimes you don't know you're repeating things until after the fact, having to go back and edit would be a pain.

A job for AI?

@simonbs Kinda like what Apple has done with the photos. It'll show you memories from a certain time, or of certain people/pets.

All you need to do is take photos.

On this same topic. I've been looking for a digital assistant that is more pro-active than responsive. I started work on one a few years ago, but... other projects got in the way.

@simonbs would love to build this for you.
@simonbs This doesn’t help you but this theoretical app sounds like it could be a fun project. 🤔
@simonbs „Streaks“ might do that. You have to define the events to log in advance though. You can define things to do more and things to do less. It’s more a habit tracker than a log.
@sillium I don't think a habit tracker works here. I'm not looking to do anything more or less. For example, I don't think a habit tracker really works for logging "I felt a sore knee".

@simonbs not exactly what you need but if you use the calendar i have an app called Timeview which you can use to get statistics/data out of calendars.
You can filter by defining rules (e.g. all events from calendar xy which contain a note „bla“ and are on weekdays etc)

@sandropennisi I'll definitely have a look at this if I end up using the calendar. Thanks for the recommendation.
@simonbs cool let me know if you use it and/or have questions and feedback regarding it.
@simonbs I use Daylio for this kind of thing, though it’s more focused on mood tracking in relation to when you do certain activities. It works well for me as something to fill out at the end of the day

@joshdick @simonbs Thanks, this is my app! I plan on adding statistics in an update but it’s going very slowly if you can bear with me! Let me know if you have any questions.
@heidi_helen @simonbs It’s a great app, I love apps that do “one thing well!”
@heidi_helen Glad to hear you’re still developing this app! It’s been on my list of apps to get for a while now. I’m going to go grab it now.
I’ve been using an older app called LogsIt that no longer seems to be supported, but it does let you export its data. Is there a way to import data into your app?
@platkus There’s an unofficial way to import data. You’ll need to export first to get the .CSV, then you can edit the data and open it in @whendidi from the Files app. It’s a bit rough right now and not an advertised feature. I have plans to add a proper import feature in the future.
@heidi_helen Thanks. That sounds good. I’ll experiment with that.
I have a suggestion for a feature. Tapping to quickly record an instance is great, but for many items I want to add a note. Since you don’t have a swipe right action, I suggest allowing swipe right to record an instance and open that instance in edit mode ready for adding a note.
Also, allowing groups in the list that can be expanded and collapsed would be great for managing related activities.
Really liking the app so far!

@platkus Thanks for your feedback! Having groups is definitely a popular feature request. I’m exploring some options there.

Actions are getting redesigned in the next version. It’s more of a container, so adding a note is done on the Event itself. You can use the History tab to quickly locate the last Event and tap it to add a note. However, I’ll definitely explore ways to make adding notes easier!

@simonbs Its pretty much the use case for the app I'm currently building.
Hopefully I will have an alpha toward the end of the month.
@simonbs this could maybe be a cool feature for @mineral one day.

@simonbs you're in luck. Sort of. There's an amazing app called Reporter on iOS. It hasn't been updated in four years, but still works perfectly! I don't use it now but I was religiously using it for a few years.

It's actually very, very, good and *exactly* what you asked for.

@nitinkhanna @simonbs I second Reporter, I just wish it was actively developed still :(
@particles @simonbs same here! It's a truly unique app!
@nitinkhanna @simonbs +1. Also, you’ll likely enjoy the inspiring work of @Feltron, as the app was designed as a personal tool.
@simonbs how about use a clicker app? Tally might work.
The other (unwanted) solution would be to use this up and coming app called Jayson as a database with shortcuts as the logic engine.

@simonbs I recently came across DailyBean and it seemed pretty slick. It’s designed as a daily tracker, but it miiight just work since pretty sure it lets you make custom “event types” to record, though probably limited to a yes/no for each type per day. Not sure about reporting either

Edit: Saw Daylio mentioned too which seems like is same thing, so feel free to ignore!

@samedwards Daytum seems close to what I want but their "All your data is public by default" policy is really off-putting. And I really don't want their "Everyone" tab so I can see when random people had sexual activity.

@CTD @simonbs Thanks for sharing. I want to offer statistics in an update. It has been awhile since I’ve updated it, but I’m planning to get back to it soon with help from some developer friends.
@heidi_helen I have been using it regularly for a long time. It does exactly what I wanted, keeping track of those things that either have to happen irregularly but aren’t essential or those things that always seem to come around too fast but the app proves my memory is tricking me!
@simonbs I think there is an app like this that @alexcox and @hotdogsladies have discussed on Do By Friday, but I can't recall the name of it.
@simonbs https://exist.io - I think this does exactly what you need :)
Exist

By combining data from services you already use, we can help you understand what makes you more happy, productive, and active.

@simonbs I’ve been meaning to look at Exist for similar (unrelated) statistics. It’s flexible and combines manual tracking with automated syncing from services (if you wish) and tries to help show context & trends from the data.

@simonbs The nearest I can think of is 'When did I...?' https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/when-did-i/id1463692593 I don't think the app will do the analysis, but it will let you export your data so you could do that in Numbers/Excel etc
