@[email protected] The problem is we can engage with the West using arguments accepted by Chinese- and most official outlets do this to appease their bosses who have no knowledge of Western rhetorical tradition. The problem with this is it's incredibly unpersuasive.

The appeal “We’ve always done it this way” is remarkably powerful and (sadly) effective in the West, as well.

Maybe not as deeply resonant as in China, but very powerful.

Along with “We tried that once [sorta, half-heartedly, and not well — a long time ago] and so we know it doesn’t work.”
