Hearing news this morning that several Capital Daily reporters have been laid off. This is definitely an issue on news coverage on Vancouver Island. #yyj #yyjpoli #VictoriaBC
@crazyjz huge loss for the local community :/ I think our last election would have looked very different without them.
@bntly will the community step up now to fill that void?
@crazyjz unsure - just means generally less none social media exposure for people doing shitty things :/

@bntly @crazyjz

Definitely a loss for the community & the local media scene. I liked the newsletter approach & I felt they provided more depth in regional reporting.

Combined with what's happening with the Georgia Straight in Vancouver, a lot of the remaining alternatives to Black Press, Postmedia & Bell Media look to be either on their way out or on their way to corporate pacification.

@HolstJarrett @bntly at the end of the day it's still a business, so if the community doesn't pay, then we don't get the news we want.
@crazyjz @HolstJarrett @bntly I bought a yearly subscription - now regretting it as I can’t just cancel. But I did unsubscribe to the weekly email to protest. Sad news - we need balanced reporting.
@deemathes @HolstJarrett @bntly perhaps time for a community owned and community minded news outlet?
