Why do people put “the” before road names and why it seemingly only a London thing?

London Road is just a road named after London.
The London Road is the road *to* London.
If you take the #London Road out of #Coventry and just keep going straight ahead along the #A45, sticking with the A45 off the #M45, you eventually end up going past #Daventry (London Road there too), #Northampton, #Wellingborough, and #Rushden . Indeed, if you aren't careful to stop where the A45 stops in Thrapston and keep going across the roundabout, you end up at #Peterborough.
So it's not quite that simple. (-:
