Some people believe there's no purpose to "liking" something on Mastodon since it doesn't affect any algorithm.

Not the case.

It does something incredibly valuable: it acknowledges people.

Which is incredibly powerful, and is all the more important *because* it's not connected to gaming any algorithm.

By liking something on Mastodon, you are doing it honestly -- without any agenda at play other than that you like it.

So go ahead. Click that like button for its own sake.

@atomicpoet @will thank you. As someone on here without an “audience “ but who actively follows and likes to interact with interesting voices, being constantly told to boost a post if you enjoy it seems totally pointless. But I’d like to let them know I appreciate the point of view or just ‘like’ what they posted

@1tom @atomicpoet FWIW, I’d bet that most of the follows I’ve ever gotten have been people who are “just” recommending my work to their friends. Those small RTs or boosts have impact.

But I always appreciate stars too. I always loved getting a star on my work when I was in school.

@will @atomicpoet I’ll typically recommend the devs, writers and creators in other places like a Teams channel at work or a subReddit or similar. In the other place I guess my interactions would give reach with the ‘algorithm’. So I suppose we’re finding the best way to show support here because it’s hard to show it otherwise
