I have performed an unscientific survey of people who are working in coding and cybersecurity to see what language they use most often.

The result: profanity.

@arclight @spaf I was told that this behavior is the origin of the verb โ€œto recurseโ€.
@spaf That abso-fucking-lutely matches my experience. ๐Ÿ˜น
@spaf The Words of Power are essential to my workflow.
@spaf
A well placed, wtf, is a key debugging tool.
@jkbecker
@spaf And here I thought no one actually read my code comments. ;-)
@spaf This is the main reason why I don't like open plan cubicle office spaces. Muttering things to myself is essential to the process.
@spaf thatโ€™s the human race right tharโ€ฆ thatโ€™s funnyโ€ฆ I donโ€™t care who ya are!
@spaf This MUST be turned into a programming language. After all, there's already whitespace and ArnoldC
@spaf I have traded in my diegetic summer New England "for fuck's sake," for a more smoldering New Jersey autumn baseline "you gotta be fuckin kidding me" to spice things up.
@spaf Can confirm. hahaha
@spaf yesterday I may or may not have made a variable named wtaf
@spaf I've mostly moved on from profanity to disappointed sighs
@NateHark @spaf ahh I see you have been in security for 3+ years then
@spaf I can confirm through nearly two decades of working in all aspects of IT that it's not just infosec and coders
@spaf this is when being multi-lingual can be an advantage: when you run out of expletives in one language, there's a whole new set in the other language.
@spaf Yeah that checks out
@spaf then can we stop iOS autocorrecting my use of fuck and shit?
@spaf beautifully layed out, well commented profanity that is.
@spaf this is also true in healthcare.
@spaf WHAT THE F*$!ING F%#& B@#^$#!ร— DID I JUS- oh. Yeah. I see your point.
@spaf and this is why QTs should be a thing, I reckon.
@spaf Ah, I see you still remember my office :)
@spaf I express my emotions with different tonalities of "Godsdamn" and "fuck".
@spaf @indi404 operators like !, $, ? and & are the quiet profanity that makes the code work.
@twt @spaf @indi404 this makes Perl the most effective programming language

@spaf I discovered this in the worst way this week, actually.

I have a broken wrist, and about halfway through the day can't type anymore.

Was using dictation software to try and write an email with a testing plan.

Software really sucked at getting normal words right, but really worked hard to pick up "fucking" and "piece of shit", probably because I was talking about it :)

@spaf haha I didn't realize it was you when I first read it.
@spaf can confirm. I was in the office for the first time in weeks today. I kept biting off creative expletives.
@spaf All software is composed of equal parts, caffeine, pizza, frustration, and profanity.
@spaf Now that is a statement I can stand behind ๐Ÿ˜‚
@spaf @hacks4pancakes Hey, now. I remember to remove those comments before I push a commit. Usually.
