Beloved professor Dean Alfange, Jr., passed away Jan. 1, 2023.

We just learned this about an hour ago.

If I followed the UMass PolSci Twitter I would have learned Jan. 9, 3 days after the visitation.

We are so sad about the loss, sadness compounded by not being present at a time of need.

After calling his wife to share our sadness, and apologize for not coming to the visitation I called the Department to ask what happened.

"Errors" and "University policy" and "seven to ten day waiting period" and other cold bureaucratic excuses. I wrote the chair to share my concern.

I got a response.

Bureaucracy is one hell of a scapegoat.
