Meet the #rainboweucalyptus.

These #gums are unbeliebable.

When a rainbow eucalyptus sheds its bark it reveals a neon green inner layer. Over time, as this layer is exposed to air, it ages into different colors. They display bright reds, oranges, blues, pinks and purples.

The different colours appear as different layers fall off, while other exposed areas begin aging.

Rainbow eucalyptus is the only eucalyptus tree native to the #northernhemisphere.

Itโ€™s found mainly in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Indonesia.

And funny enough, it is not native to #Australia!

@NessaUndreza Never seen this before!! So incredible! Thanks for sharing ๐Ÿ˜Š
@Reedwithabee I know right, theyโ€™re really beautiful. ๐ŸŒˆ
@NessaUndreza Got excited for a moment, because I thought you had seen them in Melbourne! Saw some on Kauai years ago, and initially thought they were painted. In certain lights they really are this vivid.
@embitteredmoon yeah Nar soz. I would have been beside myself if they were here!! But will make a trip to see some at some stage in the future now I know they exist. Iโ€™d kinda heard about them but didnโ€™t really โ€˜knowโ€™ much until I did a little research. Theyโ€™re absolutely magic. ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ‘
@NessaUndreza Looks like an art tree!
@ElsaStarTrewyn it looks like kids have got to it with crayons yeah!! Itโ€™s pretty cool hey. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘
@NessaUndreza You probably know about the famous rainbow eucalyptus forest in Maui. It's pretty magical.
@brianvastag I saw that online. I will make a beeline for that one day. Itโ€™s now on the bucket list for sure!! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒˆ

@NessaUndreza I never knew about this wonderful tree, so I have learned something knew today.

Thank you!

@prodygy ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ I only learned if it from reposnses to a couple of gum tree โ€˜trunkโ€™ posts and had a little search. So glad I did. Quite extraordinary!!
@NessaUndreza they are also being grown in Costa Rica for lumber and decoration ๐Ÿ˜
@nabeards oh ok. I can just imagine the products made from them! Aparently theyโ€™re fast growing so I guess it make sense that theyโ€™re โ€˜farmedโ€™ given their unique visual qualities. A shame, but you know what I mean.
@NessaUndreza do you know where in the Philippines these can be found?
@alskicav Iโ€™d suggest in their vast forrestation areas. Theyโ€™re quite common, I read with interest! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒˆ
@NessaUndreza yes I know I've visited the Philippines frequently but they have many island groups and regional variations so I was wondering if the tree was specific to a region. I was on a few islands last month but didn't see them
@NessaUndreza we have these in San Diego, love them
@dzzyd Iโ€™ve been a few times. Missed them. Bugger!!
@dzzyd Ps. Thatโ€™s darn it!! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ
@NessaUndreza I saw my first ones at the Tampa Zoo and at the Sunken Gardens in St. Petersburg. They are beautiful trees.
@NessaUndreza We had something similar to this at a school I taught in, but it was only noticeable when the trunk was wet.
@Susan60 oh wow. I can imagine the water accentuating the colours!!
@NessaUndreza A colleague & I both stopped to take photos, but file has corrupted somehow.

@catvalente loved your essay https://catvalente.substack.com/p/stop-talking-to-each-other-and-start; thank you for helping me realize how great LiveJournal really was at the time!

But I think the bigger dynamic you describe is nothing special. For millennia, there've been instances of small groups of people coming together, making a nice community, and then a more powerful group of not-so-nice see that nice community as an asset they can seize or exploit.

Welcome to Garbagetown
@ddrake @catvalente Iโ€™m into sharing hedonistic nature and art to those who appreciate it. Unfortunately there are some disrupters / exploiters out there. For sure. But Iโ€™ve found here at #mastodon thereโ€™s a kind and virtuous group of peeps who appreciate the same appreciation for goodness. ๐Ÿ™Œ

@NessaUndreza

I saw a photo of these amazing trees for the very first time just the other day. Nature's beauty never ceases to delight and amaze me!

Is this colouration only in the bark or does it extend into the inner wood as well?

@MizeDesigner I think itโ€™s only the external appearance. And being wet, accentuates their external colouration at any given time. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒˆ
Those things look ugly if abandoned. /Not sure if same plant.
@Deus yes I think they have like an adhesive type root (fine root like structures) that sticks to the surface. I remember helping to rip one off a fence as a kid and it was a challenge. And yes, like your pic, left a mess.
@NessaUndreza interesting -- I saw those trees in #CostaRica near the Arenal volcano.
@NessaUndreza
Has the Rainbow Eucalyptus displaying bright reds, oranges, blues, pinks, and purples been checked yet if it isn't perhaps gay? Have the right-wing nuts of Oz not demanded yet for all these trees to be cut down? It has to be an offensive display of LGBTQ colours to them. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ
