Cannot reiterate this enough:

PLEASE don’t request refunds from Apple for any unused time on your Twitterrific or Tweetbot subscriptions.

It could literally bankrupt small shops like these.

Twitterrific: End of an Era • The Breakroom

Twitterrific has been discontinued. A sentence that none of us wanted to write, but have long felt would need to be written someday. We didn’t expect to be writing it so soon, though, and certainly not without having had time to notify you that it was coming. We are sorry to say that the app’s […]

@marcoarment I plan on going a bit further and letting the payment for another year go through (2nd February) if it remains available.

Unfortunately I haven’t found any other way to support @tapbots yet as the @ivory is still in testflight.

@jirak @marcoarment @tapbots @ivory @mark Ivory should set up a way to add a tip with tiers in the app when it releases (on top of what I presume will be a subscription)
@jirak @marcoarment @tapbots @ivory same; February 2nd renewal date for Tweetbot. If it’s still on the AppStore payment will go through. One last 🍺 round for the dev ☺️
@jirak I bought a copy of Pastebot directly from the Tapbots site. That way they get all of the money minus CC fees without giving Apple 30%.
@mikestanley that’s a great idea, I’m going to do that - cheers!
@jirak @marcoarment @tapbots @ivory Yeah, trying to figure out how to make sure @mark and @paul get that renewal payment next month. Leaving it all to renew if it can.🤞🤞🤞
@marcoarment also take a second and look through the icon factories app list if you haven’t. They have wonderful apps. I recommend tot. Im sure they would be very appreciative.
@jgrout @marcoarment I second that! IconFactory has a great Apple Watch app, "Now Playing Plus", that I use everyday. Apple's Now Playing applet only controls Apple apps—Now Playing Plus will control whatever was playing last (like Downcast).

@marcoarment Absolutely. I paid $5 for an app called “Spring” a week ago when Tweetbot shut down. It basically is unusable now. Not requesting a refund for either Tweetbot or Spring.

Indie developers deserve some damn respect.

@EshuMarneedi @marcoarment Spring actually still works fine - at least the full version. I use it daily still.
@mwest217 @marcoarment Huh. I’m getting an error about 75% of the time.
@EshuMarneedi @mwest217 @marcoarment As of this morning, Spring stopped working for me entirely.
@mwest217 Developer now allows you to input your own API key.
@EshuMarneedi how does that work? I’m not finding that setting on the Spring app.
@mwest217 Update your app first. Then go to Settings > Advanced Settings > Setup Custom Tweet Source Label. Follow this guide I made to get it working. https://medium.com/@mactechnophilia/how-to-get-spring-working-again-71c54df64265

@EshuMarneedi Spring has an excellent Mastodon version called Mona on beta right now, if you’re interested: @MonaApp
@yatil @EshuMarneedi @MonaApp I can confirm that it’s an excellent client
@yatil @MonaApp I’ve tried it and it’s really good! Just like Ivory a bit more.

@marcoarment that’s likely what Twit in Chief is hoping for…

Hopefully Apple stands up for them, but I wouldn’t hold my breath…

@david @marcoarment Apple would not stand up for them. They have no motivation to do so. In fact, the App Store guidelines say that they will remove apps which use third-party services if the third party requests it.
@marcoarment Not sure how much time is left in my TweetBot subscription but I never planned on a refund and will gladly pony up for @ivory once it’s out of beta (been using it for a week now and it has been great)
@marcoarment does doing the opposite help? I bought another years worth of Tweetbot just to support the cause.
@mingo @marcoarment If you wanna do that, I would recommend buying the Mac version on the website since Apple doesn't take a 30% cut of it.

@marcoarment my tweetbot sub ends naturally in about 2 weeks. Of course I’m going to keep it in place, but I’ve turned off renewal.

That said, as soon as I can pay for ivory, I will.

@marcoarment Elon deliberately hamstringing Tweetbot is what pushed me out of there. It was the only thing making the platform functional. So now I’m here! Great podcast this week, as usual! :)
@marcoarment @bigzaphod I’ve cancelled my subscription to Tweetbot but did not, & will not, request a refund. Looking forward to Tapbots Ivory here on Mastodon.
@marcoarment seriously. They don’t charge that much, and they provided great apps and will keep doing so. That’s worth letting them keep my, like, six bucks.

@marcoarment "PLEASE don’t request refunds from Apple for any unused time on your Twitterrific or Tweetbot subscriptions."

[Update: I’m pretty sure my reply below is wrong. I recall reading about it, but can’t find my source nor anything to confirm it.]

Here’s why: Apple will refund the full amount of the app and keep their 30% service fee. For example, if you paid $10, Apple will take $10 from the developer, even though Apple only paid $7 to the dev.

@radley I think Apple would pull the full $10 instead of just the $7 they sent to the developer originally.
@deancommasteven Thanks, yes that's more accurate. (I updated my original post).

@radley @marcoarment

That’s not really the point, pal

Apple issues aside, it’d be much better if the 3rd party Devs get to keep even 70% since absolutely none of this is their fault

@marcoarment @radley Do folks have experience with this? Based on this thread, it sounds like even though Apple retains the right to charge the service fee back to the developer they don’t always do so:

@marcoarment You are absolutely right. My Tweetbot subscription renewed on 14 Feb. Hope it helps then to develop something amazing!
@marcoarment seconded. It’s such small beer for the individual anyway. I was going to let my next renewal on Feb 2 for tweetbot go through because it’s all of SIX DOLLARS. For as much time as I spent using it that’s nothin.
@marcoarment Can we just keep sending them money anyway?
@ericdomond @marcoarment
I don't know about Tapbots, but Iconfactory has a Patreon, and both companies offer other apps.
@marcoarment I’m keeping my Tweetbot subscription until Ivory is in production and has a subscription.
@marcoarment So true. Don't request refunds. Just mourn the shutdown.
@marcoarment I have 49 weeks left on my Tweetbot subscription. I will not be requesting a refund.

@marcoarment

Hopefully all devoted users of Twitterific and Tweetbot understand this.

Sad day for sure.

@marcoarment @mathias i loved that app this is actually really sad
@marcoarment my Tweetbot renewal comes up in a few weeks. I’d actually like it to go through to help — in a tiny way — development of the next cool thing.
@marcoarment Jesus, what kind of asshole would even try this? I went to make sure my sub on Tweetbot was up to date, and can’t wait to pay for Ivory
@marcoarment My plan is to let my renewal on Feb 2 go through.

@andyfragen @marcoarment

Ditto

Least I can do in the circumstances

@marcoarment sue Twitter, then pay the users for the refunds
