Looking for a new job, or want to hire someone? Sick of the toxic culture on LinkedIn and other job boards? Want an alternative that integrates with Mastodon?

It's time to check out Flockingbird!

How it works is that Flockingbird (@flockingbird ) scans the Fediverse for posts with job-related posts (such as "jobs", "getfedihired", "vacancy", etc.)

Those job posts are then searchable on the Flockingbird website ( https://search.flockingbird.social/ ).

It's definitely worth checking out!

Hi, is there some way to prevent my profile to become part of that search index?

@flockingbird

@jesuisatire @flockingbird

Good question. On the Flockingbird site, it mentions that: "But be sure that your account allows indexing by bots. We respect those settings and won't index a vacancy if your account does not allow it."

So I *think* the setting you want in Mastodon is Preferences -> Other -> Opt out of search engine indexing, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

(Please note I'm not involved with Flockingbird, I just found it, thought it might be useful to some people, and shared it in a post.)

@ajsadauskas @jesuisatire this is correct.

In pleroma, akka, or other fediverse software, this setting may be called different, or may be absent. We pull in the authors profile to double-check this.

@jesuisatire @ajsadauskas @flockingbird

At least, it seem to not do a full text search but a hashtag search. So it would deliver the same results as a manual search i guess (assuming your own instance sees the as much as this search engine). Shall be fair then.

Edit: How #flockingbird seems to work:

Step 1: Searches/filters all posts it can see for certain hashtags as #vacancy, or #job: 👍

Step 2: User can then do a full text search within the prefiltered posts 👎

Not fair, IMO.

@baddadda

Looks just like another disrespectful application of something "because they can do it".

Having the possibility to create a group "jobcenter" or a specific profile that can be mentioned or something like that (like @ [email protected]) it is obvious that there is no interest in letting people decide by themself.

Admins should ban that profile and probably the instance.

@ajsadauskas @[email protected]

@baddadda

you see, it's because this profile blocked flockingbird.

I guess the post get's out without a handel reference.

@[email protected]

@jesuisatire

interesting 🧐

logic but still surprising

@jesuisatire

Did they possibly block you? 😆

@baddadda

I told you, I blocked them.

So my profile doesn't recognise that profile as a handel.

On D* for example if you want to mention a profile by typing correctly you'll have to write:
@{[email protected]}

@baddadda @jesuisatire @ajsadauskas did we miss or break something? Anything we should fix?

@flockingbird @jesuisatire @ajsadauskas

You might start within reading this thread 😉

@baddadda It seems the author blocked us, or their server is defederated from ours. In any case: we did not see that complaint, nor can we reply.

To answer the question: opt-out is easy: for mastodon, here's the instructions. https://fedi.tips/staying-safe-on-mastodon/#HidingPostsFromSearchEngines

@flockingbird

You might write a bot reading the answers of accounts blocking you via your first/dark account.

You might check it manually in case you are lazy.

You might also read my answer.

And you might reflect about why opt-out is considered ungentle (gently spoken).

Btw, blocking an ungentle bot unfortunately is the safest measure of self defense.

@jesuisatire

@baddadda @jesuisatire this account is not the bot though.

@flockingbird @jesuisatire

Maybe he consequently blocked the instance 😉

@flockingbird but your crawler is, so as it is impolite, your instance will be widely blocked.
@baddadda @jesuisatire

@flockingbird

The Fediverse is made of humans, and humans are not publications, even when we publish. So here, there is still a strong social expectation and culture of opt-in (affirmative consent), not opt-out (assumed consent).

If you want to run a successful service here it has to be opt-in, not opt-out. We realise this may run counter to your expectations, and may make your business model impossible here, but it is nonetheless the case.

My “profile” is on many scraper websites, which have aggregated what they can find out about me without my consent. Nobody likes being listed on those sites, but also on the wider Web there is no practical way to stop it. Here, it is trivial and normal to share information about and block opt-out “services” like yours, such that to date no such service has succeeded. If you have investors, they should know that you are attempting something high-risk and unwanted.

Either find a way to do this opt-in, or expect to be shunned, blocked, excluded and otherwise obstructed by the people of the Fedi.

@[email protected]'s profile:

Buiseness network or social network?
Why don't you get your terms straight?

Let me guess, you where raised like that. Ahh .. and every body does that .. american way of life you know .. "don't mis your dead line" (just a hint).

greetings form the ministry of truth ..

@baddadda @Viveka

@jesuisatire @flockingbird @ajsadauskas I think it's fair to assume that if someone tags a post with job-related hashtags one wants it to be found.

@clacke @jesuisatire @ajsadauskas The common understanding is that Mastodon does not have search, but instead uses hashtags for discoverability.

If you use a hashtag but still don't want your toots to be discovered on that hashtag, you can opt-out of search-indexing, in your mastodon settings.

Would there ever be a case where someone uses a hashtag, has their profile set to allow indexing, but still not want that toot to be indexed? Please contact us, and we'll remove it.
