There's a narrative that Mastodon is "losing users". Okay, what do the actual numbers say?

According to this MAU chart, active users has been consistent -- albeit volatile.

Activity is based on how foolish Elon Musk is being at any given moment.

Mastodon usage spikes whenever people perceive Twitter as dying.

Prior to November, there's been spikes. You can actually see this in April/May.

What's different this time is that people are staying.

https://the-federation.info/platform/21

The Federation - a statistics hub

Node list and statistics for The Federation and Fediverse

What people don't talk about *enough* is local posts.

For months, this was consistent with a slight incline upwards.

Then at the tail end of December, there's been a big increase.

This implies that while MAU has taken a dip, more users are posting than in November.

In reality, this is more encouraging to me than MAU because it means more people are *posting* instead of merely *lurking*.

But wait! There's more!

Back in November, there were 3,644 Mastodon nodes.

Right now in January, there are 11,732 nodes.

That means Mastodon has grown 3.22x since November when we consider nodes.

By the way, data on the-federation.info is quite conservative.

Other sites, like fediverse.observer, show that MAU continues to rise.

https://mastodon.fediverse.observer/stats

Fediverse Observer checks all sites in the fediverse and gives you an easy way to find a home from a map or list or automatically.

Mastodon Sites Status. Find a Mastodon server to sign up for, find one close to you!

Two other charts from fediverse.observer showing Average Mastodon Posts Per Month and Average Mastodon Comments Per Month.

Again, it's an upward trajectory.

Now some people might say, "So what about these stats? Social media is not about metrics!"

And they're right.

However, what's important to me is the *truth*.

Right now, the media is spreading a narrative about Mastodon losing momentum.

The more suitable narrative is that Elon Musk hasn't recently done anything stupid to spur Mastodon sign-ups.

But there's many things that can change: outages, high-profile hacks, mass bannings, etc.

To me, what's more interesting about Mastodon sign-ups is how many people *this time* have decided to stay and make the Fediverse their home.

As I've said, there's been spikes in sign-ups before.

Most of the time, people don't stay -- they head back to Twitter.

This time, many of them aren't heading back.

@atomicpoet I'm disappointed more folks I really like cannot kick the habit at the bird site but hopefully over time that changes.

It's people like you that make people like me stay 🍺

@Brightdave @atomicpoet It took me a while to break my addiction to the bird site. People who have lived much of their lives with stress can find it hard to leave the outrage behind. Musk’s pronoun tweet did it for me. Funnily enough my reaction was stronger than that of my NB oldest.
@atomicpoet one does not simply walk back into Mordor?
@atomicpoet as one of those people I pretty much phased out and uninstalled every other social media I had. Whether this is ever the most popular or not I'm staying and even if nobody was here I'd probably just view my instance as a blog. Since the fediverse and mastodon is more than just a twitter alternative I hope to see it thrive and expand. Love seeing things like pixelfed exist even if it isn't my preferred 'flavor' for the fediverse. Was excited to see Tumblr and Mozilla support as well.
@atomicpoet I’m so invested I’ve already closed IG, FB, & GoodReads. I’m currently looking for a long form for my poetry.

@atomicpoet

I keep checking the bird site but am gradually checking it less. I much prefer this one. One thing that keeps me going back is the sense the I am more likely to find breaking news faster and from a larger number of sources over there.

@nastynana16 @atomicpoet Actually no, it’s faster over here, once you get your follower numbers up…just like the other site!!!
@nastynana16 @atomicpoet yep. More sources, but I am seeing a nice trickling in of them here

@morganalafee @nastynana16 @atomicpoet need an “over there” recruiting campaign…with a catchy tune…

Let’s see…

Over there…over there…

Over there, over there
Send the word, send the word over there
That the Yanks are coming
The Yanks are coming
The drums rum tumming everywhere
So prepare, say a prayer
Send the word, send the word to beware
We'll be over, we're coming over
And we won't come back till it's over, over there

…and without a swear word…

@andymatisz @nastynana16 @atomicpoet Hiya…. What’s a Yank ??? Vermonter?? Or just white, elite, wealthy New Englanders or somebody else????

@morganalafee @andymatisz @atomicpoet

At the period of the song, WWI, the English referred to Americans as "Yanks." Also during WWII. Not sure if they call us that any more.

@morganalafee @nastynana16 @atomicpoet I thought it was everyone north of the mason dixon line…
@morganalafee @nastynana16 @atomicpoet Hello, can I comment with a retoot…this seems to elude me and it would provide context to my(obviously brilliant and witty) replies🥴

@atomicpoet

It's interesting how different people view social media.

I was moving away from twitter early last year, and looking for alternatives that didn't have advertising, or forced "promoted" posts.

The advertising was getting to the point of being obnoxious, on every thread etc, block one and 3 more pop up.

It had become like a lot of games, (I get that ads pay the bills for game devs etc), ads have become so obnoxious the games become unplayable, and most of the time it's just greed, not necessity. Same with SM platforms like twitter, it was just greed in the end.

@atomicpoet @montepaulsen Yup. I’d been on Twitter for ages and had over 800 followers; a mix of personal and professional contacts. Once the journalists were thrown off, I moved here and deleted my Twitter. Now it’s a slow rebuild, it’s different, and I think, better.
@atomicpoet I think the increase in instances is key to this. The unique thing about mastodon is the local instance which lets you have a home within the wider fediverse. This probably doesn’t apply to the big instances - but a smaller local / interest group can really make a difference. I really feel I have found my tribe in neurodifferent.me (thanks @squish ) - which makes a real difference to the “stickiness” of the platform
@atomicpoet what’s the definition of a MAU? By what metric are they considered to be “active”?
@asteroidrainfall MAU = Monthly Active Users
@atomicpoet but what constitutes as “active” like one login a day or a least one a month? I’m just curious what criteria it take to be considered “active”.
@asteroidrainfall As per what Eugen said elsewhere, it’s login per month.
@atomicpoet I'm in that group. The first couple
Weeks I would check back in at the bad place, but I don't even do that anymore.

@atomicpoet One of the things that strikes me that people overlook is that it's perfectly normal for people to bounce between social networks and may not spent equal amounts of time on each of them, and with people join a new network it takes time to adjust to it and figure out how to make it work for you.

I joined in May, but my behavior here was pretty intermittent with my posting and checking in because I only knew one person regularly posting here. It took time to feel comfortable and connect with other people. I didn't really start posting regularly til late October/early November.

It's way too soon to say that it's losing momentum.

@atomicpoet I'm one of these person who decided to stay. Twitter account is still there. But have not posted for a while.

@atomicpoet we must also take under account that mastodon is only at the beginning. No third party apps. No feed enhancements. The fact that it has so many users with no hedge fund money is tremendous at show the power of FOSS and commons based peer production. This applied elsewhere it could actually change the system.
@atomicpoet I like mastodon. it is a calmer place than twitter, less numpties .. Though I have a load of decent Twitter buddies so I use both
@atomicpoet the-fediverse.info provides daily data, fediverse.observer — monthly, from what I see. That can just mean that f.o has not caught up yet to show the slight decline that t-f.i is showing.
@atomicpoet personal factoid on MAU: i made 3 mastodon accounts in november, trying to figure the server thing, so i made MAU drop by 2 in December. Sorry! Probably not really a strange thing to do around here.

@AlexGizis @atomicpoet I think we all did. I created a bump of 6 or so when I joined (back in 2017) which then settled to 1.

I think there is an entire science of Fediverse statistics that hasn't actually been properly figured out at this point.

@atomicpoet I think the drop they are pointing to is really caused by people who made backup accounts in case Twitter dropped dead and was no longer functional and aside from maybe a post or two, went back to being idle afterwards. I don't think Mastodon lost those people as much as they weren't ever here for anything other than a "just in case".
Considering the site’s title is ‘the federation’, I guess it’s taking into account other sites that don’t use Mastodon?
@Deus Correct. I'm just looking at Mastodon data.
@atomicpoet

Chris, it’s not just mastodon but it may be worth counting others such as pleroma and misskey in the mix as well plus several other lightweight apps derived from the Mastodon code base. Taken together the count is high.
@atomicpoet Sorry, can you clarify what the "local" modifier means here?
@misc I'm assuming it refers to Mastodon instead of another Fediverse service. But you'll have to ask the-fediverse.info for an exact definition.
@atomicpoet Who's spreading such calumnies?
@atomicpoet I actually prefer this side even though it’s not quite as popular yet. The likelihood of worthwhile interaction is orders of magnitude greater here. I’ll be curious what happens when Tweeter finallly crashes. One day, Elon is going to roll snake eyes in tech dept Yahtzee. Not if—when. Things will get interesting then.
@ryanpaaz @atomicpoet same. In fact, I really like how it feels now - so I'm not sure I really want this to become more mainstream. I'd hate for things to become more toxic somehow. Though maybe Mastodon won't become toxic like Twitter when it grows bigger, because of how it's set up.

@atomicpoet The active community is definitely much larger than before November!

On the other hand, MAUs HAVE steadily declined since early December. Interested to see where things bottom out. https://mastodon.matthauger.com/@mastodonActiveUsers/109705634893541939

Mastodon

@matt That's because Mastodon counts you as an active user the moment you create an account.

And of course, there was a big spike in sign-ups during December.

What's more important is posts and comments. That has gone up since December.
