One of my favorite winter plants has to be Edgeworthia, or paperbush. The buds start forming in January and burst into a fragrant butter-yellow bloom in February before leaves emerge. This shrub is suitable for shade gardens and is also deer proof - at least here in Georgia. After it blooms, it retreats into the landscape and looks a lot like a rhododendron.
