@caseynewton The Ars Technica article mentions that third-party clients using the API were always frowned upon but I have no idea how much of that was in official policies.

@jrdepriest @caseynewton the TL/DR is years ago Twitter decided to copy Facebook and force everyone to use the official app, restricting the API to sharing your high score in a game/etc. After user backlash, they decided the API ban should only apply to new twitter clients - existing ones were left alone. Until now.
