Just got our gas line capped and plugged. No going back now!!!

Nasty old #GasRange out, and no surprises (like a giant hole in the floor) waiting for us!

Not shown: actually getting the gas range out of the kitchen. There was language. But it's done.
We have paused to debate a side quest
The side quest is temporarily abandoned while we explore some #electrical mysteries and plan the day's first trip to Lowes

We have reached the walkie talkie portion of today's event

To be clear the walkies are so that I can summon help if/when my partner gets stuck in the crawlspace 😳

Update: my amazing and fearless husband did some crazy McGuyver $hi+ under the house and in the electrical box and we are all ready to attempt to bring the new #induction #range tomorrow morning.

GOOD MORNING!! It's new #Induction #Range Day!!
First order of business: double check last night's #electrical work in the light of day. Then we haul the new #stove in and hope we measured everything correctly!

I have about 30 minutes to become a world class weight lifter.

A recap of our progress so far while I stall for time:

1 July: we find a "broken" #induction Viking #range on #Craigslist for dirt cheap, fix it, park it in the garage
2 Lots of life happened including buying some ridiculously expensive 240v wires
3 Thursday 2 dudes from the gas company come to play with the #puppy and cap the #gas line to the kitchen
(more to come)

4. Yesterday my live-in #McGuyver and I pulled out the stinky old #GasRange and carried it out into the garage. It was heavy, but carrying straps made it possible.
5. We cleaned up modest amount of mouse poop and dust bunnies from the wood floor under where the stove had been, then began contemplating how to remove the gas line where it poked up out of the floor....

#NaturalGasBlows

...(We had wanted to save the old #GasLine (🤷‍♀️) but opted to cut it with tin snips (not "ten snips," as I first thought, confused as to how we could be so prescriptive about it) instead).
6. After we pulled the snipped gas line out, we happily realized the hole in the floor (for the gas line) was big enough to fit our very expensive 240v wire, and paused a bit to make another pot of #coffee and celebrate

A lot of head scratching ensued while we (my handy partner) tried to make sense of the multiple electrical control panels, installed over 80 years by ppl with widely varying levels of skill, and planned his first (and thus far only) trip to the hardware store to purchase...

* one 240v outlet
* one doohickey to cap the old 110v outlet that the nasty stinky #Gas #range had plugged in to
* one thingy for the breaker box
* some white 6-gauge neutral wire
* another thingy for the breaker box for the neutral wire to connect to
* probably a new tool of some sort, based on past experience

More coffee

7. More #McGuyver stuff, while the very expensive 240v wire and the 240v outlet were connected, and the wire stuffed in the old #Gas line hole in the floor.

8. A tyvek suit and n95 mask were donned, walkie talkies switched on, goodbye kisses kissed. McGuyver piled tools onto a plastic sled and ventured into the terrifying #crawlspace and I watched #DavidsonBasketball (we lost by 1)

9. Eventually the end of the very expensive wire poked through the outside of the house, and I pulled out the predetermined 7'. Then I went to the basement and waited for my truly amazing partner to re-emerge from the crawlspace, which took 30 minutes because of the absurd route he had to take around ducts, pipes, conduits, and a freaking tree stump (yes).

10. A shower was necessary, and then more quality time with the electrical panel. I focused on parenting and learning how the #AirFryer works.
Eventually the electrical work was done, beers were had, more basketball was watched. Then we rested up for the heavy lifting of today.

@DrTCombs actually, “natural gas burns”
@DrTCombs I will move to that soon. Advises are appreciated.

@PauloJCGFranco If you are doing it yourself, give yourself much more time than you think you need, be ready with a backup cooking method, and remember that #InductionRanges are really freaking heavy.

But it's worth it. I just baked muffins and forgot how good a kitchen can smell when there's no methane!!!

@DrTCombs
Dopey question: what are the bulky knobs for? I got to try out an induction range this week and it was 100% touch screen controls.
@bettybarcode no touch screen here. All knobs. I love knobs.
@DrTCombs
Ah! I didn't know that was an option.
@bettybarcode I think this model is a few years old, and it's out of stock now. So maybe knobs are old tech?
@DrTCombs @bettybarcode Good choice. The touch screens are the first thing to fail.
@bettybarcode @DrTCombs I use an induction stove with touch controls and would strongly prefer having only knobs. The reason is that those controls often get activated accidentally while cooking or using the field as work surface.
@DrTCombs well done!! This project on our list. But 1) I ain't no MacGiver 2) We will need to upgrade to 240v receptacle 3) we need a 36" stove (the size of our retiring old viking gas stove, now beyond repair, harder to find and expensive.
@TonyDick #1 notwithstanding, have you considered a 6" vertical cabinet and a 30" range to fill the space?
@DrTCombs Tricky to match other custom cabinets, I think we ruled that out initially. but in light of 36" cost and their limited availability, we may reconsider. Thanks for the suggestion!
@TonyDick I want a cabinet like this but am told it's not happening. So I'm living vicariously here 😂
@DrTCombs congrats! When I looked into what I needed to do (electric upgrade especially) I hit the pause button on doing it. It's a lot of money and not a small project. Post more content of your cooking adventures!
@DrTCombs can I ask what features you liked about this range other than the knobs?
@thebostonlol TBH, we only got it because a burner wasn't working and its prior owners weren't the fixing type. So they posted it on Craigslist for cheap, and we bit. For $100 we are able to get the broken controller repaired and it works great now.
@DrTCombs (Orson Welles standing ovation gif)
@thebostonlol I'd be posting cooking content right now, but somehow in the post installation celebration we locked ourselves out of our pantry (which we did not realize could lock)
@DrTCombs Kudos for tackling a big job and working through it! (I like the color of the oven too!)
@dougklotz Thanks! It was a beast of a task but I'm so glad we've done it. And I love the blue as well. It'd never occurred to me that large appliances could come in fun colors.
@DrTCombs
So, did the stove come in this condition or did you and McGuyver refinish it? Looks beautiful. My electric range (bought new) looked real shiny in Lowe's but 'stainless' now chipping off. Gotta figure out something for that so I'm jealous.
@MKSinSA
This is the way it looked when we got it, minus some grime. We were lucky to find it!

@MKSinSA Evidently people pay astronomical amounts for this stove, new. I'm sure a lot of that is cachet, but it also just looks really nice. It works well, too....

(Since it was down a burner, its prior owners sold it to us for $800. We got a new burner controller made for $100)

@DrTCombs we did this last year! No regrets at all.
@DrTCombs Wow, sounds like quite the process but well done for #MakingTheSwitch!
@DrTCombs Do you have an anti-tip bracket?
@b0000urns uhhhhh
@DrTCombs as long as everyone's careful when there are scalding liquids?
@DrTCombs I don't know you but I'm following the Induction Stove tale like an episode of "Holmes on Homes!"
