this is how we installed multi floppy disk software in the 90s, exactly like this.
@djlink whopping 14.4MB! Who need this ridiculous amount of space?!?!

@leidkultur Any "modern" webpage need it. Actually no, only the JS part of a single webpage use all that space

Old stuff was much better in some aspects…

@djlink

@djlink At some point I had 4 floppy drives for my Amiga 500. I could play games without changing floppies 💾!!!
🤣
@endavid @djlink Monkey Island 2 came on 11 disks. Plus an extra one of your own for save files. I played the whole game back then with just the one internal disk drive because my sister was young enough at the time to somehow find all the diskswapping an oddly fun game in itself and we enjoyed the MI puzzles and stories together.
@endavid @djlink even with two drives, I had some rare issues with some programs not starting as each connected drive had reserved a full track’s worth of chip RAM (possibly even in the raw MFM format).

@endavid @djlink
As long as you never had to play Rise of the Robots

Even the 10 disk drive depicted in that GIF would have been insufficient to avoid disk swapping - Rise came on 13 disks

@djlink @foone this you?
@c0dec0dec0de @djlink yes. And for bonus fun, there's a pretty good chance when they downloaded that GIF, it was from my Tumblr:

@foone i really appreciate that you properly cited title and episode number for each animation. thank you.

@djlink At least this way you’d find out immediately that disk 9/10 has an “.arj” (later “.rar”) file with a CRC error so that you can ask your friend to make another copy.

PS: Tell me this made you hear the sound of a bad floppy in your head and I’ll tell your age.

@carlosefr I can vaguely remember the sound of bad floppy yes
@djlink Ahhh the trauma of having a friend's dad copy a new game on three floppy disks only to come back home, and have one of them fail. Some good times, those in the floppy era.
@jki I remember taking a work to school and failing to work, "i did the work I swear" xD
@djlink removing them also satisfies
@Sonikku @djlink Ooh! I might have needed an NSFW warning for that one! 🔥
@djlink I remember it as clear as every plastic electronic was in 1999.
@djlink Oh wow I WISH this is how we installed multi floppy software instead of the endless disk swap method
@Rasp @djlink go back a bit further and add flip to the mix…
read, flip, swap, read, flip, swap, read, flip…
@djlink I bet those are SuperDisks or something :p
@djlink that would've been really handy
@djlink man I wish I could have been this cool

@sangster @djlink Hah. I can see how in Japan this would have seemed like a path forward, considering how many Japanese micros were doing dual floppy setups where both were used at the same time in really weird, creative ways:

That just looks like someone took a NEC PC 8801 MC and hit Ctrl-C Crtl-V a bunch of times.

@djlink had one of these floppy disk changers in my trunk in high school.
@djlink
"Insert disks 1-8 again to complete installation"
@djlink
That's an old #futurist #anime. No one had computers with more than 2 floppy drives, except perhaps some #Amiga user
@levibeach
@djlink I remember win98 installer was something silly like 40 floppies.
@maid what a cumbersome yet delightful process
@djlink I had those for Zip and Jaz drives. Pro level.
@djlink I don't have it anymore (I sent it to @foone ) but IBM had floppy disk magazines to load into some of their machines. 8" ones. Can't remember how many disks it held.

@djlink insert disk 14...... Disk 14 is corrupt, please insert disk 14. Installation exited with errors.
@djlink
for a second I thought this would be a gif from Blue Gender and I was preparing myself for some really intimate dev device merging.
@florianjehn
@djlink @robotspacer I was born to late to know if this is a joke or not
@djlink me switching data and waveform cards at the same time on my Yamaha SY77 synth
@djlink i would have been so cool with a floppy /speed loader/ XD
@djlink nah, the 3rd one didn’t fail to read.
@djlink this would have made that Slackware install go a hell of a lot faster.
@djlink Back when tech's were real techs and computing had style and class.
@djlink this would have made windows installs so much easier!
@djlink The whole crate was Windows 3.11
@djlink Knowing the PC-88 existed and used a dual-floppy setup that required you to switch specific disks into specific drives explains how all this multi-floppy stuff must have seemed like the solution the future needed.
@djlink That is friggen awesome.
@djlink @shmouflon for loading up Seed data?
@djlink @az this is so soothing and I know I’d need to load them out order 😊
@djlink Thought it was going to be one of these things
@djlink @dee something very satisfying about this
@Lexa @djlink I wish it were as easy as this in reality 😁
@djlink That's how I loaded up my 15-CD Disc changer, as well. Exactly like that.
