Oh my word, I thought I'd use #WordPress for the first time in many years to whip up a website, but it's a dog's breakfast! The theme editor has a mind of its own – refusing to do what I tell it and hiding important settings just to fuck with me. Oh, and the post editor decided to change the way that typing works.
After a *lot* of theme hunting and testing, I've found that #PressBook Grid Blogs theme is perfect for the site I'm building. Only one minor CSS tweak required. Everything else can be achieved through the point-and-click settings of their free version. #WordPress

@mark Themes are becoming more kludgy with 6 bazillion features that you'd never use.

I have been reverting to boilerplate themes for my clients lately to cut down on the bloat.

BlankSlate

Donate: https://opencollective.com/blankslate. Learn: https://blankslate.me/. BlankSlate is the definitive WordPress boilerplate starter theme. I've carefully constructed the most clean and minimalist theme possible for designers and developers to use as a base to build websites for clients or to build completely custom themes from scratch. Clean, simple, unstyled, semi-minified, unformatted, and valid code, SEO-friendly, jQuery-enabled, no programmer comments, standardized and as white label as possible, and most importantly, the CSS is reset for cross-browser-compatability, with no intrusive visual CSS styles added whatsoever. A perfect skeleton theme. For support and suggestions, go to: https://github.com/bhadaway/blankslate/issues. Thank you.

@the_Effekt Heh, problem is it's so long since I've done any web development that I kind of need to learn from scratch.
@mark I hate it with a passion these days. How did they mess it up so badly? Ugh.
@Essjax It has the potential to be good but it just isn't.
@mark you might want to look at the Astra theme. Sane defaults and very customizable. Even more so with the pro version, but for a regular blog the free theme will do. It also doesn’t use the new theme editor.
