Tomorrow marks the start of our 7th weeklong podcasting institute in partnership with @natlhumanities 🎙️. Since 2019 we've collaborated to train nearly 400 humanities/ humanistic social science graduate students and faculty in public-facing digital storytelling and #DigitalHumanities.

Our week together imagines new possibilities for engaging in the humanities and the academy. Using adrienne maree brown's Emergent Strategy as our starting point, we encourage participants to center kindness and generosity as they collaborate with strangers to make a podcast in 4 days (most without prior experience). We emphasize process over product, creating a safe space for experimentation (there are no failures!), and letting go of perfection. And we center care for ourselves and each other as the foundation of trust.

Each of these virtual institutes is exhausting and exhilarating. I can't wait to meet our 74 grad student participants and see/hear the amazing things they do!

We kicked off Day 2 of our #podcast institute talking about the elements of a good (scholarly) podcast. Among many things we explored---structure, sound design, accessibility---we emphasized defining your audience, building trust, and being authentic. If we're going to create and nurture genuine relationships with each other and our listeners, we need to define and uphold our values and ethics in whatever we create. #DigitalHumanities #DigitalStorytelling
We're nearing the end of our journey together this week, and I'm utterly amazed by the compassion and generosity of our participants. We've pushed them out of their comfort zones, challenging them to work in ways very different from how they're being trained in their respective graduate programs. They've risen to the challenge. They're caring for each other as they work toward a collective goal, all the while demonstrating flexibility and empathy. No matter what their #podcasts sound like tomorrow (and they'll be fantastic), they've been given a glimpse of what academia can be like if we work together to imagine better ways of being together.
That's a wrap! Thanks to our incredible participants, the amazing tech team 🤩, and @natlhumanities for a transformative week of #DigitalStorytelling. Our students produced incredible #podcasts by building trust, engaging with kindness, & caring for each other. Stay tuned for samples🎙️ #DigitalHumanities #dh
BTW, there's still space in our summer virtual #faculty #podcast institute. Interested in exploring #DigitalStorytelling and #DigitalHumanities in your #research or #pedagogy? Then this weeklong immersive experience, run by @natlhumanities and #DHatSDSU, might be right up your alley! Contingent faculty especially welcome: https://nationalhumanitiescenter.org/education-programs/faculty-programs/podcasting-humanities-faculty-june-23/
