My 4am brain wants to know what triggered the invention of brief underpants. Did someone wake up one day and think “screw these comfy bloomers, I want something that cuts into my groin, rides up my butt, forces me to remove the edges of my pubic bush and introduces me to the world of thigh chaff and yeast infections. Today I shall invent that and this will be my legacy!” Seriously though, why briefs? Can someone tell me? #clothes #history #historyofclothes #pants #underwear #knickers
@elizabethbeston I'm glad I'm not the only one with 4am brain questions relevant to the evolution on humankind! 😂
@elizabethbeston It was possibly looser than the bikinis? Or would those have been invented after, by someone who wanted it to be even tighter? The explanation I've heard is it provides more support (for dangly bits).
@mwt I can understand that for people with dangly bits! But for those without? I include the bikini within the brief brief 😆. I wonder if it was the creation of tight trousers that required a tight under garment. And then somehow it became the norm regardless of one’s outerwear.

@elizabethbeston

We may be able to "thank" the #1920s flappers for that. Due to the shape of the #fashion at the time, bulky, long bloomers were not suitable anymore.

They shorten them to modern knickers lengths (but kept the legs wide-ish).

And then the subsequent eras decided that fashion must be even tighter around the lower body and underwear tightened accordingly.

To be fair, it also made #exercise much easier!

@mythologyandhistory fantastic! Thanks so much for this. I thought it might have had something to do with outerwear. But I didn’t know 1920s! I think it’s time for a bloomer comeback. Besides, exercise is overrated 😉

@elizabethbeston

You'd think "cottagecore" would have done it, but oh well!

@mythologyandhistory I have just learnt a new word! ‘Cottagecore’. I had to look it up. And yes, agree!

There is a lot to be said for going commando...
@diverdutch @mythologyandhistory oooo no. Not for me. 😆

Way more comfortable. Except when you are in jeans and then bloomers should be fine

Happiness in your forties is finding knickers that don’t creep up your arse.
