I just found out that Sun Ra and His Arkestra did a fairly straightforward cover of Disney's "Pink Elephants On Parade" from Dumbo.

Apparently Sun Ra was asked to contribute to a compilation album of Disney song covers and the producer suggested this song. He watched the movie and when he saw the scene in the song with the pyramids, he agreed to do it.

He later released a full album of Disney covers.

Sun ra - Pink elephants on parade

@rogerriddle oh yeah, but the album art on that youtube is for Continuation, no Disney songs on there. Sun Ra released a whole album dedicated to Disney tunes called Second Star to the Right but "Elephants on Parade" doesn't show up there, it only appears on a compilation called "Stay Awake."

The Arkestra played quite a few all-Disney live shows and will still call a Disney tune at their shows today.

@resipiscent I thought that was the wrong album cover. Did you see someone else in this thread share a live show with some Disney covers?

@rogerriddle yeah at Iron horse cafe in MA, havent heard that one yet but I will. '89 was the Disney year, I saw them play La Pena in Berkeley and Koncepts in Oakland.

The bootleg from Birmingham, AL that year is amazing, starts with Astro Black, Enlightenment...Forest of No Return! Lets Go Fly A Kite, Unmask the Batman, and the finale in 89 was always Zippadeedoodah.

@resipiscent Wow, I need to find that bootleg. That sounds awesome.

@rogerriddle it's from 'stay awake', produced by the late great hal willner (who did similar projects for the music of nino rota, kurt weill, and mingus - all very much worth tracking down). willner always brought people together from different genres and eras, and the results were always inspired.

here's a bit on 'stay awake': https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/stay-awake-music-from-vintage-disney-films/
