When you see someone like Elon Musk embracing the far right, it's not because the far right has any kind of coherent political or intellectual worldview he agrees with. It's because the far right is the last bastion of shitty people - they will accept anyone regardless of their personal behavior.

The far right have no standards for behavior, identity or beliefs - you only need to share the raw desire to dominate others. The far right welcomes all manner of abusers, thieves, grifters, and scoundrels.

Logically therefore if you're an abuser, thief, grifter or a scoundrel you will eventually find that the only friends you have remaining are far right extremists.

Because fascists lack a coherent political worldview, they have the biggest tent in politics. Contrary to popular belief, fascist movements do welcome all races, sexual orientations, and gender identities.

As long as you share hatred of some of the same groups, you can find a home in the fascist movement. If you're a trans woman who hates Black people, you'll find a home in the fascist movement (as long as you're willing to overlook transphobia).

If you're a Latino man who hates women and wants to dominate them, you'll find a home in the fascist movement (as long as you're willing to overlook racism). You'll be useful to the fascist movement as a token or ideological shield - they can use your marginalized identity to further their cause.

This is why you'll see gay fascists in a crowd of Proud Boys who are shouting "f*ggot", Black fascists storming the Capitol alongside people shouting the N-word at police, and Jewish fascists at an antivax rally standing next to people holding signs saying that COVID is a Jewish conspiracy.

@chadloder I think what you see as fascist is just the group of people voting no confidence on the left. The ideology isn’t consistent beyond fuck off because that’s why people are there.
@chadloder Also, notably, TERFs peddling transphobia to a virulently anti-feminist audience.
@chadloder Milo Y. George Santos (purportedly). Peter Thiel (why, he even funded a right-wing dating site for heterosexuals only). I could go on, but I don't want to make myself sick.
@chadloder Compartmentalization is wild.
@chadloder
Crazy they don't realize if their "side" wins, it's only a matter of time before they get their jail sentence or bullet.
@chadloder there can even be perks for fronting such a group as a beard from a maligned group. the GOP has put women and nonwhite people forward as often as possible for similar reasons.

@chadloder as a Jew it's so difficult seeing my family fall into the vile pit of hate mongering terrorists. Even with all the blatant antisemitism surrounding them they are blind to it as long as they keep getting fed the adrenaline inducing bile by their leaders.

1/2

@chadloder Its a disease that uses adrenaline to perpetuate itself. My grandparents who were heavily involved in the civil rights movement, developing real special education curriculum, and deeply involved in non-profits and public education their whole lives. have succumbed to it because as they age and their friends depart all they do now is sit around absorbing hate from Fox news or worse.

Its so sad to see people I've always admired become outright bigots.

@witch_of_winter @chadloder That sucks, Sean, I’m sorry.

It so happens that today I saw a photo exhibition (with audio guide by the artist) largely about the experience of seeing one’s Jewish family go MAGA. It’s by Gillian Laub, at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, and I thought it was pretty great.

@chadloder Nonetheless, there are similar patterns to #fascist movements, e.g. see Robert Paxton's classic book "The Anatomy of Fascism", and Jason Stanley's more recent book "How Fascism Works".
@chadloder this, unfortunately, but this. We also see it with terfs. There are lesbians who'll claim they just want to protect themselves from "men" (where they'll blatantly and deliberately misgender trans lesbians) and then ally with the far right and groups who explicitly want to get rid of gay people and send women back to the kitchen. I don't get it. How can you hate a group so much that you're willing to join sides with people who hate you just as much?
Fascists are very inclusive when gathering power, but when they've got it, watch out for the nocturnal long pointy bits.
@chadloder The core of fascist movements is angry, which is why they often rise in countries at times when those countries are suffering economic decline, times of social upheaval (demographic shifts) or a loss of real or perceived national power on the international stage
@chadloder this is the best explanation of why we see "blacks for trump", "women for trump", Andy Ngo, Ali Alexander, etc. supporting white supremacy and fascism.
Robin Hood (@[email protected])

@[email protected] deep sigh American White nationalism, which emerged in the wake of the 1960s civil rights struggle and descends from White supremacism, is a revolutionary social movement committed to building a Whites-only nation, and antisemitism forms its theoretical core. https://politicalresearch.org/2017/06/29/skin-in-the-game-how-antisemitism-animates-white-nationalism

@chadloder Senselessness. It can sometimes make perfect sense.
@chadloder the "race" has always been an excuse. it can be black, poors, women, or anything else. As long as that helps and supports their storytelling.
@chadloder I checked out Tim Miller's book "Why We Did It" from the library hoping to discover some insight and was dispirited to discover this exact point. I had always wondered how the Log Cabin Republicans could support a party that was literally committed to their destruction. And it's merely because they wanted to exult over other people they despised. That's it: just power to inflict suffering on people they hate. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/29/books/review-why-we-did-it-tim-miller-republican-road-to-hell.html
‘Why We Did It’ Is a Dark Ride on the ‘Republican Road to Hell’

The former political operative Tim Miller writes about why most of the Republican establishment learned to stop worrying and line up behind President Trump.

@chadloder It's really unfortunate. The far-right have been one of biggest beneficiaries of the Internet. I don't even like calling them the far-right. It's euphemizing evil.
@chadloder The minorites that are far-right strike me as some of the dumbest people alive. How can they not know they're toying with fire by aligning with evil? Some real unfortunate dark possibilities: Disabled? Dead. Jew? Dead. Gay/Trans? Dead. Black? Slaved at "best." Women? Back to patriarchy. Enjoy not being able to work or vote again. It isn't like this is some kind of conjecture I'm illustrating. All examples have been the case in the past.
@chadloder I do not trust evil not to scrape the bottom of the barrel when it comes to evil. The leopards will eat their face, and it will be deserved. Coupled with one of evil's favorite go-to tools--religion--it seems that good, or decent, has always been handicapped in the everlasting battle of those who want to keep some kind of humanity in the world and those who want it gone.
@chadloder And this is why you'll see trans women "boogs."
@chadloder authoritarianism is the desire to be on the side of the bully instead of being a victim

@chadloder I observe that in Germany, too. Those who justify, support, vindicate or endorse fascist movements often belong to groups that these movements violently target.

It's a global pattern. The common basis always is the hatred of another group.

@nnz @chadloder the common pattern is it’s a party of brats. You have to wonder where do all the spoiled brats go to when they grow up?

What doesn’t brat behavior look like? Laughing at all the bullshit they got away with, never taking any accountability for mistakes, wrong doings, temper tantrums, lies, rage, deceiving people, manipulating family and friends, harassment to get what they want, double standards etc. there’s more, but my point is, this describes kid behavior.

Now ask yourself, is there a point where that all suddenly changes, especially if nobody ever holds them accountable, or does it get worse? Does the level of each of those behaviors go up a notch with every scenario they get away with using those behaviors?

This is why they hide behind religion, to cover up the complete opposite of their deranged arrogant, sociopathic, narcissistic and psychopathic behavior that gets worse and worse the more they get away with.

This is human behavior, which is why we find fascism all over the world, it’s not a “race” or gender problem, it’s parental upbringing. People who behave this way fall in the fascist category and all share these deranged behaviors. The hate you speak of is projection to escape any responsibility for their shit behaviors.

“It’s not my nasty personality, it’s women” “it’s not my two faced personality it’s black people, Jews, gays” “it’s not my lack of accountability for my behaviors, it’s men” (there are fascist women as well because it’s a mental condition that everyone is susceptible to) “it’s not my rage because I always want my way and can’t deal with any reject, it’s Asians” “it’s not my arrogance, it’s white people”

It’s a mental disorder and form of delusion that comes from sweeping self problems under the rug, hubris. People (regardless of age, gender, skin color, region etc) just run with it and find and connect with others who do the same and label it things like “alpha” “superior” “dominant” “clever” “witty” as ways to sugar coat their mental disorder they keep coddling.

My question is, what do we do about all this fascist uprising? Do we continue to enable their shit behavior and repulsive personalities, make deals, compromise and appease them, while the rest of us keep living under their deranged behaviors and egomaniac personalities that get off on repressing and oppressing others to feel better about how mentally damaged they are? (Because it will absolutely keep getting worse) Or do we start protests and band together and address all the problems that come from their nazi fascist behaviors?

We need livable wages, we need less work hours to break away from their deranged environment and take our lives away from their exploitation.

#5HrsMaxWorkDays #LivableWages #UniversalHealthcare #QualityEducationSystems #ProgressiveEducationSystems
#AffortableEducationSystems
#CertifiedBCorporations

All these tags are the antithesis of their lack of accountability and ability to exploit, recruit, gaslight and keep using everyone for their deranged amusement. All these tags represent what needs to change in order for us to flip the script, and the way we do that is by protesting, day after day, week after week, month after month like in Iran, demanding these tags to go into effect, especially 5hrs max work days and livable wages, otherwise protests will continue.

Rotating groups of protesters (group A of a 1000 people, than group B of a 1000 people takes over, letting group A rest, group C, etc) will allow this to continue, otherwise companies and fascist in the government will wait it out and continue to exploit loopholes, buy out lawmakers etc.

Has education gotten better or worse since the 60s? Have wages gotten better since the 70s? Has racism dissipated since the 80s?

Change has to come from protests, as protests will shut down profits, and the economy. it’s a waste of time waiting for politicians or politics to do it because in that scenario, corruption will have the upper hand because they’ll cross ALL lines (as we’ve been witnessing) to get what they want (brats).

@chadloder Sure. Blaming other people for your problems, wanting to exterminate them to alleviate those problems, whilst worshipping and basking in the collective glow of icons of rectitude, strength and success... these are traits historically common and easy to follow. In fact, it's where all fanaticism end up. Naziism and Communism are just two recent examples, but religions and military cults have provided many more.

@chadloder

This approach is also convenient in demanding "overcompensation". If you are from one of the minorities you can prove extra commitment while joining fascists. Hate a little more and set the bar to self demand adaptation and conformism to that group a little higher and they have their winwin.

@chadloder The things things that all #fascists share in common are 1) bigoted hatred for the "other", and 2) a deep, deep stupidity.

@chadloder

After they pack away the lower branches there’s nothing left to eat but each other.

@chadloder can I just hate all fascism tho?

@chadloder it's all fun and games until they get power. Then the knives come out and then the useful idiots get purged with any competitors to the dominant faction.

There's very little that separates people like Ernst Röhm from the likes of Milo Yiannopoulos or Candace Owens (mostly a willingness to do violence instead of just inciting it). If the fascists ever do win, the exact same thing will happen to them.

@chadloder
Perhaps a common quality of these disparate folks you describe is having a shared assumption that social hierarchy is both natural and necessary.

When you think you're high enough in that hierarchy, your interests have a way of aligning with those higher up in it than you- especially when you don't have any grounding or moderating beliefs or ideas.

Also when you think this way, it's easy to assume that everyone else thinks in terms of navigating the hierarchy even if they don't

@chadloder This is, sadly, all too true. I've seen this happening in my own, mixed race, family. My brother is virulently misogynistic, racist, and homophobic/transphobic. He believes in the most wild conspiracy theories, is an anti-vaxxer (our parents were an MD and and RN), and has fallen down the "ethnonationalist" authoritarian reactionary fascist rabbit hole, desperately idolizing the Proud Boys and Trump despite being an object of their contempt. He took part in the Jan 6 attempted coup.
@chadloder Strictly speaking, far right extremists don't have friends, only temporary alliances of convenience.

@chadloder

Eh, there are a lot of shitty people who aren't chums with far right people, the difference is in covert vs overt behavior, I think. There are abusers who have leftist or at least liberal politics and are good at behaving in public, while indulging in their abuse in private, and only towards their victims. That's part of how they acquire victims.

@witchydiana we're getting better at outing those slimeballs too, and it's pretty often that they'll discover a sudden affinity for the alt-white when we do. @chadloder

@witchydiana I never said that right-wingers are the only shitty people. I am describing a very specific dynamic.

In fact, when an abuser is outed from leftist circles, you often see them move to the far right where they run the "I was a leftist until cancel culture came for me" grift.

@chadloder

It's specifically the last sentence in your first toot I'm responding to here, lots of shitty people are able to get revealed to be shitty in one community, and then infiltrate a different community. It's certainly hard-to-impossible if you're a household name like Elon Musk, but I don't see it as a solid eventuality that an abuser, thief, grifter, or scoundrel can only ever end up with far right pals.

Maybe we're just talking differing levels of fame or notoriety here.

@witchydiana I see your point. I think the global far right is unique in that many groups will tolerate people in SPITE of their shitty personal behavior, whereas the far right tends to lionize people because of said shitty behavior.

@witchydiana

Chad is not knowledgeable enough to determine causes of Musk's choices, & I don't have the time for it. His basic point is not about the far right but that Elon Musk is shitty. There will be public negatives of anyone so known & significant.

There is a purpose in such toots if you want a debate & following by being controversial, but it's not the truth.

Age & detachment might help understanding.

@chadloder @witchydiana Taibbi being a case in point
@julieofthespirits @chadloder @witchydiana Abusers and grifters that find acceptance in the right usually also end up blaming "lefties" for being extreme left and hypocrites, instead of admitting their behaviour or crimes is the reason they lost acceptance.
@julieofthespirits
What was it that Taibbi did to be ostracised? I don't know as much about Taibbi as Greenwald, but in Greenwald's case it feels kind of like he wandered over to the right of his own volition. I mean, he's always been pretty unpleasant to people online, but I don't remember him being cancelled for it.
@chadloder @witchydiana
@nottrobin @chadloder @witchydiana after metoo people dug up his first, not very widely distributed book where he brags about sexually harassing his Russian coworkers while working as an expat journalist there, he went (back) to the right immediately afterwards
@julieofthespirits
Ah ok. Yeah that sounds like it'll do it.
@chadloder @witchydiana
@nottrobin @julieofthespirits @chadloder @witchydiana Greenwald didn’t so much wander to the right as returned to it. He was defending Nazis pro bono before his short lived stint of criticizing W when he earned his “lefty aura”. He also supported the war in Iraq, before attacking every democrat who voted for it#
He simply returned to his roots once he became Tucker Carlson’s cohost.

@witchydiana @chadloder I feel like there's a connection to be made here with Dan Price; how he was held up in the press as some sort of "anti-Elon" hero of the working class, when the entire identity was cover for his deeply shitty and violent personal behavior.

But the overt/covert distinction is surely why "traditional" conservatives of the McConnell ilk are frustrated with the MAGA assholes. The GOP has always been the party of bigotry, oppression, greed, and cruelty, but they did it with a veneer of respectability because they weren't overt. Now there's Nazis marching in the streets and flinging their shit in the Capitol — it's downright unseemly! It can't be controlled, and it's giving away the game.
