I'm waiting for a curbside order at Lowe's.

.... and see a guy probably in his late 70s/80s wearing portable oxygen go inside with no mask. Not around his neck, to be pulled on - he's wearing a t-shirt. No mask as he goes inside.

While another guy, probably in his 80s, comes out... while I hear a woman going by behind my car hacking every few seconds.

Alienating. The #CDC has done nothing to inform and warn the public.

@progressiveartist They really don't understand, multiplied by having anti-science propaganda in front of them on Facebook everyday. No .gov effort to counter it, and "car mechanic" doctors not doing their part.

@chipmcdonald But they were the largest cohort to adopt the vaccine the first round. Seems it's the gov downplaying it now that's the biggest issue, and as you said deniers on social media.

@chipmcdonald I have come to realize that people are just accepting the risk in favor of spending their lives the way they want. I'm OK with it. I can't relate, because I'm healthy and 41 and yet I still don't go in Lowe's without a mask. But it's their choice and they have been told of the risks. Should the CDC be doing more? Yeah of course. But all people have heard of the risks by now. All know of the triple pandemic (even the most uninformed of my own family members). They just don't care.

@Girlonavespa I agree they've (for the most part) been told of *some* of the risks, but the aspect of immune dysregulation they're completely unaware of, and most think #longcovid is a myth. These are things that fall under the auspices of the #CDC, to educate the public.
For the rest, there is the aspect that (as I know it now) the sub-median portion of the population literally do not understand the risks. I would not have thought that 4 years ago, I had a more... naive outlook then, but for most of the elderly/comorbid I saw I'm pretty sure their perception of "covid" is a very abstract one, informed by Facebook.
They don't care, but I'm not sure it's fair to say they all fully fathom the risks they're taking.

@morekindness #CDC has respected members making respectable papers in respectable environments for respectable organizations...
.. but are also conduits for careers outside of their organizations. It's obviously politicized as every other .gov. Nobody is brave enough to step off the ladder to the next level of their career. Obviously CDC, #HHS, #NIAID, et al are aware to stay in their lane.

@chipmcdonald Well, there are likely multiple factors that underlie their mishandling of covid and particularly the communications to the public. Political factors were clearly present in the first years, but even with a new administration, they don't seem have learned or corrected course. Prob still fear of political backlash, but I would hope the CDC leadership would have more integrity than that. Though it may be too late to undo the damage that was done early on & restore the public's trust.

@morekindness Sorry, at this point IMO it's very clear the #CDC are as corrupt as any other government agency. They're very, very carefully couching what they say in the most minimalist terms possible, and paying no care to appearances or consistency in messaging. They like their positions, and don't want to buck the system.
Even now, with XBB moving in, the performative move to test only Chinese flights coming into the U.S. - ignoring that everyone else on a flight with infected people are exposed, no tracing - it's illogical from a health preservation standpoint. It doesn't make any sense. I know people that work at the CDC, they' know better.

@kateiacy I was not conscious of the general population not being able to mentally model their chances/relationship to the number of encounters they have. The #CDC have failed to present the threat in terms of daily life. They're not thinking about how many have come and gone in the air at the registers, walking behind people's exultation in the aisles, getting help from someone talking loudly at them - they're not thinking of the math behind these events as being multipliers, only that they're thinking "it's a big building" they're going in "once".

No public warnings of vaccine escape with new variants, antivirals not working... and for some reason nobody can say the verboten word #mask any more. The elderly, comorbid are being culled.
