Slowly getting there on v2 elephant. Have to remind myself to keep the poly count low until I’m really sure of the basic shapes. (Still working on the shape of the ears)

Making progress. Found a few ugly 6 side poles in the model yesterday and so I had to spend a bunch of time trying to remove or move them. Ended up having to redo the whole head because the polygons just weren’t set up right the first time. I feel like I learn so much with each project I tackle. It’s far from perfect but much cleaner than my last one.

Can’t wait to finish so I can learn how to rig and pose this guy. 😁

Sample of some tedious work required when modeling. To get sharper edges when subdivided, I need to redirect the edge flow. I need to perform this task to 23 more corners now. 😅
Looks pretty good, but the edges are probably too sharp now. Also noticed some pinching going on because I’m probably not subdivided enough for these details. Going to have to go back to the last saved copy, subdivide, and try again. 🫤

I think I’m done. Totally forgot to model the mouth though. It’s probably too hard to get it to look right at this level of polygons. 😅 Oh well. Wouldn’t have seen it in most cases anyways.

If I don’t post again within a few days, it’s because learning to rig this up drove me completely insane.

#3dArt

Well that was a long evening. I was able to get it rigged and posed. Tons of work and a bit of trial and error, but it works pretty well! Tomorrow I’ll probably optimize the model and rig so it will pose better. Now I can pursue my dream of making children’s nursery rhyme animations on YouTube! 😅

The polygon trunk wrinkles had too many clipping issues when I bent the trunk so I got rid of them and created a bump map texture instead. I’m sure there’s ways to prevent the clipping, but I don’t want to spend hours just trying to figure it out. This is an easier fix.

Not perfect, but I can live with this for now. My knowledge of the software just isn’t sufficient enough to get this where I’d like it to be.

Some of you wonder why I’m spending so much time playing in 3D when there’s things needed to be done in the app. Part of it is having a solid character to base the app icon off of. Another part is for marketing (website, etc). But the most immediate reason is for the onboarding views. I’m only sharing this one because you’ve already seen the pose. I have some fun ideas for other views, and you’ll have to wait until they are in the app. 🙃

@mark This, in iPhone wallpaper size, and we’re ready for NYE!

(It is, of course, beautiful 🤩)

@mark Looks great from here. All it needs is a party hat :)
@mark it’s looking great, Mark! It’s fun to watch your progress so thanks for sharing
@mark I can't possibly do it, but you're getting close to some sort of a capital M, maybe? Maybe an I (for Ivory) ahead of it?)
@mark whoops … that's a photo of my cat that was left in drafts. Well he likes your work also!

@mark Perfection is a curse, done is better than perfect.

But also, this is pretty darn perfect. I seriously love it a lot. You did an amazing job.

Icon when? 😁

@prismamidi the icon still has to be drawn in 2d as vectors to look 3d. Going to be my nightmare. 😅

@mark I don’t know about you, but as a designer myself, I tend to feel more comfortable around the word “vectors” haha. Can’t wait to see it, I’m sure it will turn out amazing.

Also, unrelated but I love Ivory’s icons A LOT. You found an amazing balance between them looking unique and recognizable. Easily one of my favorite parts of the app.

@prismamidi appreciate it! Yea I’m normally more co for table with vectors too, but I’m pretty bad at the beautiful 3d app icons stuff. But there’s only one way to get better. 🙂
@mark I’m guessing Ivory customers will receive a token for the presale of the NFT right?
@mark It’s adorable, and you should totally consider selling merch, like stickers people can put on their laptops and such 😄
@mark God, this all looks so complicated.
@karim 3d is super complicated. Hundreds of options for everything. I probably understand like 2% of what this app is capable of. 😅 Just have to take it 1 step at a time.
@mark I’m loving this thread! I understand 3D modelling superficially, but have never dug into trying it – so I’m living vicariously through you
@mark Is there a name you’ve unofficially begun calling it?
@mark oh, this is so cute... I want this figure
@mark Looks pretty nice 👌
@mark That’s amazing work in an area that I unfortunately have absolutely no clue about. Looking forward to meeting this big guy in Ivory!
@mark They are a sweet, precious angel that should be protected at all costs 😍
@mark This is looking amazing and it’s making me want to take a second shot at 3D modeling myself. Incredible work!
@prismamidi do it! It’s so rewarding as you get past all these huge hurdles. 😅 I still feel like I know nothing, but it’s always so exciting when I accomplish something.
@mark Thanks for the encouragement! I guess I will have to reinstall Blender tomorrow then haha 😅
@mark oh wow that’s so good, love it!!
@mark, what software did you use?
@vanmeerbeke I use cinema 4d.
@mark thank you! It looks stunning
@mark Wow, some serious skills there!
@mark 😍 awww they’re ADORABLE. So happy for y’all working on @ivory
@mark my goodness, this looks so cute, Mark! Great job! 🤩
@mark it looks so cool. Congrats 🙌💯

@mark should you need any voice over talent for this new outlet, hit me up!

I love seeing expanding skill sets like this, so cool

@mark cute😍 makes me wanna throw him a ball ⚽️😀
@mark A good asset for About screen shenanigans.
@jamesthomson @mark I want to launch bananas at the elephant !
@mark omg this is so cute!
@mark and this is with a short trunk?
@moritzdietz yea I shortened it. But probably could be a little bit longer. 😅
@mark when can I buy a desk toy version?
@joshferrara maybe I’ll look into that on the 3rd iteration. 😁
@mark Will this be the basis of a new app icon? Looking forward to it!
@jsit it’s for other things, but his overall look will hopefully be for the eventual default icon.
