✨ Games I played this year ✨

πŸ’€ Nightmare Frames πŸ’€

by @postmodernadv is a love letter to 80s horror movies! 😻

I absolutely loved the whole setting & atmosphere, and I could not stop playing until I reached the end of this incredibly well crafted story. πŸ’œ

While this game has many highlights, the best part is the exceptional writing! ⭐

This masterpiece is my personal game of the year 2022. πŸ†

@duke_of_germany @postmodernadv convinced. πŸ˜…
I've been reading about Nightmare Frames for a while and it sounds totally up my alley. For 10€ on Steam there's basically no reason not to give it a try.
@mforester @postmodernadv Awesome, let me know how you liked it! 😺
@duke_of_germany @postmodernadv I hope I won't bore or annoy you with incremental reviews. πŸ˜…
I've just played the first two hours of Nightmare Frames. It starts out as a pretty slow burn, but that's alright for the horror genre. Sadly I had to stop playing for today, just when it sank it's hooks into me. All the Edward Keller stuff is riveting. It reminds me if Sutter Kane from "In The Mouth Of Madness", which is one of my favorite horror movies.
@mforester Not at all, and I am glad you like it so far! ✨
And thanks for mentioning "In the Mouth of Madness"! Great comparison, and great reminder I should watch it again. Haven't thought about this movie in a long time! πŸ™‚

I just finished #NightmareFrames and I think it might be one of the best #Lovecraftian horror games I've played so far.
The writing is excellent. Although I've said previously that it takes a while to get going, it doesn't let up once it gets it's hooks into you. I would have absolutely finished this in one sitting (took me ~5h according to Steam), but I only have a few hours a day to play. πŸ˜…

The second act had a few really effective scares that kept me shook up, even after shutting down my PC.
The third act is...something else. It's probably not for everyone, but I liked it. As a parent, it had one scene -- actually more of a conversation -- that really twisted my insides. It was powerfully uncomfortable, but that is why I seek out horror games and movies. And it is a testament to this writing, that it never feels cheap or forced. It fit the theme perfectly.
@duke_of_germany 3/3
In fact, thinking a bit more on this, I'm amazed at how well these three acts blend into each other. There are distinct cuts where the location and with it the type of mystery or horror changes, but there's always a bit of foreshadowing, a small taste of what's to come. Amazing! 🀩
I'll probably sit down and write a blog post about this in the next few days.
I'll post a link to it when it's done, although I don't know yet if there's much more to add.
Absolutely loved your game Nightmare Frames @postmodernadv . πŸ₯° 🀩
Thank you!
And thanks @duke_of_germany for bringing it to my attention.
Now excuse me, I've got some evangelizing to do. πŸ’ͺ

@mforester

I am SO glad you liked it as much as I did! πŸ₯° Your whole description is spot on! Something about this game really "stayed with me", which doesn't happen often.

@postmodernadv 's writing is excellent, and I do not have any concept of how one would construct a story for an adventure game that feels so "right" (but I would be curious to know πŸ‘€)

Please let me know when you wrote your blog post! πŸ™‚

And maybe also copy your posts as a steam review, to help boost the game! πŸ™

@duke_of_germany

I already copied the posts I made here over to Steam as a review. πŸ™‚

Nightmare Frames (2022)

Nightmare Frames by Postmodern Adventures might be one of the best Lovecraftian horror games I’ve played so far. It starts out as a pretty slow burn, but that’s alright for the horror genre. Once it’s got it’s hooks into you, it becomes really hard to put down. With two kids and a daytime job, I only get a few hours to myself every evening. If not for that, I can guarantee that I would have finished this in a single sitting.

@mforester

Wonderful review! ✨ You summed it up perfectly! 😺

@duke_of_germany thank you for your kind words. 😊
@duke_of_germany @postmodernadv
I'm also absolutely planning to grab this story for a Cthulhu tabletop campagin if I ever get to run one again. πŸ˜…
@duke_of_germany @postmodernadv that looks awesome, can't wait to try it
@duke_of_germany @postmodernadv Oh this sound really good, I'm definitely sold on the game by this post alone.

@fringemagnet @postmodernadv

In case you try it, I would love to hear your opinion! πŸ₯°

@duke_of_germany @postmodernadv Definitely, it's already been added to my wishlist because it very much sounds like my thing.
@duke_of_germany @postmodernadv Mine are God of War Ragnarok and Ghost of Tsushima. Currently playing Horizon Forbidden West.
@duke_of_germany Oooh! Thank you very much!❀️
