@MichiganCJ kia ora from New Zealand. I have recently started my own exploration of the Science of Reading, hoping we do some PD as a school too. I have dabbled with a few attempts at phonics lessons with my 9-11 year olds and they seemed very interested. Hope I can learn more 🤩

@meganisalanis I'm currently going through LETRS certification. I'm in Michigan U.S., and our state department of education had grant funding for a certain amount of educators.
It's a two-year program, and very time consuming, but so worth it.

Good luck on your journey! It's worth it.

@MichiganCJ many thanks for your words of encouragement and for the links in your intro
I'm enjoying the podcast "Sold a Story" as I do some work in my garden 🤩
@meganisalanis @MichiganCJ it was required by our state a few years ago. K-12… please please please start teaching your students phonics early along with Greek and Latin Roots!!!! Our state threw phonics out in the 90s for about a decade(I said it was the stupidest thing I ever heard then). Those kids who couldn’t pick up reading naturally had no chance & we are paying for it now. W/O phonics, a lot of kids had no idea how to figure out words they didn’t have memorized.
@johnettesnuggs @meganisalanis couldn't agree more. To top it off, we have a large % of students who are EL and graduated ELs. So we have students up through high school who need #phonics to be explicitly and systematically taught.
@MichiganCJ @meganisalanis@mastodon.
It’s really not fair to our students to send them through school without knowing all the skills they need in order to succeed. You wouldn’t make them do upper math without teaching addition and subtraction.
