I’m quite pleased at finishing Le Morte D’Arthur before returning to The Once and Future King. So much of it really is expanded and in between Mallory’s text. She in the following quote is Nimue.

‘Than she and Merlyon wente over the see unto the londe of Benwyke there as Kyng Ban was kyng, that had grete warre ayenste Kyng Claudas.

And his first name ys Galahad—that know I well," seyde Merlyon—"and syn ye have confermed hym Launcelot."
"That is trouth," seyde the quene, "his name was fyrst Galahad. A, Merlyon," seyde the quene, “shall I lyve to se my son suche a man of prouesse?" Yee, hardely, lady, on my perelles ye shall se hit—and lyve many wyntirs aftir.”
//Than sone aftir the lady and Merlyon departed.’ —Le Morte D’Arthur, Book IV

White includes that scene and expands upon it.

Launcelot learns that Arthur is married, that the round table was formed, and that Gawain was made a knight before him. He becomes jealous. Jealous of Guinevere for usurping Arthur’s love, and jealous that Gawain was made knight and joined the round table. So he decides to leave home immediately to join Arthur’s court.

So while I would have enjoyed The Once and Future King on its own, knowing how closely tied the two works are I’m very happy I am reading them back to back.
