#DiscussionStarter : If you were to create a #SocialMedia experience. What things would you consider? How would you make it safe and yet open?

Answers can be social, technical, legal, etc…

Not a Developer just a thinker.

Things to consider.

1. #Communities tend to be compartmentalized.
2. People like to belong to more than one.
3. Cost of #Technology
4. What constitutes #Safety and #freedom ?
5. How do we structure it?
6. What #features should it have? Why/why not?
7. What #laws need to be adhered to?
8. How do we scale #governance of the communities we build? Public/Private/Paid

Community:

If I were to make an #app. I’d like to be able to create #feeds based on #Interests. Currently we can search interests and find people with similar interests and interact with them. But because people are multi faceted simply following them can take you off topic. And maybe you don’t want to do that today. So a feed that stays on subject would be useful.

Possible solution: Allow lists to be made based on #tags and not #people

@krnlkule The ability to follow hashtags instead of (or in addition to) people, which already exists, would seem to accomplish some of that. No searching needed, and no need to scroll through non-relevant posts
@richardgrant Forgive me if I misinterpret your post. I am aware that you can follow both. However you can’t create lists based on #tags to cover a range of tags related to the subject, nor can you add people to those lists and filter only for the tags you want to read about. Sometimes you just want to see particular peoples posts on the tagged subject. That filtering functionality doesn’t exist yet in mastodon, in my experience. Note I mostly use Toot App and on desktop the web
@richardgrant Actually we could have just one feed with filter capability. Like you do when building reports. Though I expect that might be technically challenging.
@krnlkule
Discussion forums have fallen out of fashion but they were very well suited to following interests while still creating communities.
The ones I was most involved in all had a common interest but also lively discussions on many other topics and everyone just participated in whichever interested them.
Of all the social media I've used, that was my favourite format.
#QT #Boost #QuoteAndAttribution Conversation starters. Would free the original poster from dealing with reply’s to a post started in this manner but would alert them to the Conversation sparked by their Post/Article. If it became a pile on it would be limited to the starter conversation. Not sure if this is a solution but it’s an idea to consider.

What are the mechanics of #CommunityBuilding ?
We have Follow, #Tags, #Lists, and #instances for connecting.
Does there need to be #CommunityTools to de-federate the need for a community to belong to an instance or engage in #tags?

What should that tool look like? A subscription custom feed? Does the feed need to have its own #AdministrativeTools? Who gets to be the administrator and is the host instance responsible for its development/use/and governance?
