The @wilw incident is something we need to understand better, because it shouldn't have gone down the way it did.
Here's what I understand, from vague memories and what others have said to me:
(1.) There was one legit reason to be upset with WW that I'm aware of, but it was something fixable.
(2.) Attempts to have a conversation around fixing it didn't go well.
(3.) Rather than trying out ideas to de-escalate the situation, the mods at mastodon.cloud threw in the towel pretty quickly (or so it seemed from my perspective).
It seems likely that individuals and communities who prefer conflict over peaceful existence saw #1 as an opportunity to sow dissent, and exacerbated the problem at every opportunity. We ended up with a situation where if you defended WW, you were perceived as defending the [questionable thing he apparently did which is what #1 was about], and if you advocated for addressing the issue, you were seen as attacking WW.
I don't know for certain that I could have handled this better than they did -- and for that matter, I don't really know the full extent of what they tried; I haven't talked with any of the mods involved -- but "60 reports a day" doesn't seem like "OMG JUST TURN IT OFF" territory to me.
That said, I've been trying for years to get certain software written which would help with this kind of situation, and I'd feel much better equipped to handle anything similar if that software were available even in rudimentary form.
...and as fedi becomes more mainstream and the Eye of Sauron increasingly notices our existence, we will need to be better prepared for things like this.
