Cartographic Card Advent Calendar!
Chicago publishing firm Rand McNally produced map-based holiday "cards" for decades that are actually rather fabulous, large-scale facsimiles!

This one, from 1960, celebrates the earliest globe made from paper gores, the Erdäpfel (Earth Apple) of 1492 Nuremberg, Germany. They appear at full scale on the verso...

And, in another facsimile, they appear totally in the round!

Oops, broke the thread.

German merchant Cornelius Heilwagen's friends gave him many risqué illuminations for his 18th c. album amicorum. This "lady's" chocolate is so alluring that her romantic target's face was censored! #NewberryLibrary (Case MS 5471) Many early modern treatises were penned about the morality and healthfulness of chocolate, drinking and otherwise, once it became a fad.

Take A Prayer Leave a Prayer Advent Calendar!

Would some "baby Jesus milk" soften hardened hearts? This odd little book of prayer cards was meant to be taken apart and shared by nuns on Christmas Eve among other festive occasions.
