BREAKING: The Taliban have banned women from universities.

This is a shameful decision that violates the right to education for women and girls in Afghanistan. The Taliban are making it clear every day that they don't respect the fundamental rights of Afghans, especially women.

@humanrightswatch this is not new. They banned schools for girls since they came in power

@clarinette The Taliban banned women from secondary school in March and banned women from parks in Kabul in November, but banning women from university is new.

Last week HRW spoke to a woman who had just completed here fourth semester. “I’m afraid it’s the time – they’re coming after us now.” She was right: https://www.hrw.org/news/2022/12/20/afghan-university-women-feared-dark-day

Afghan University Women Feared This Dark Day

On Tuesday, the Taliban announced a ban on women attending universities “until further notice,” a misleading use of language by the Taliban to dampen expected public and international outrage. But by now we know what that means.

Human Rights Watch
@humanrightswatch i watched a documentary on French TV about universities in Afghanistan. They had very limited classes. It’s a disaster. I tried to see if we could organise some@sort of online support for the girls. Something needs to be done.
@humanrightswatch Republicans dont need inspiration.
@humanrightswatch Had the Taliban themselves attended university, they likely wouldn’t engage in such abuse.
@humanrightswatch While I’m not surprised, it still makes me sad. What can we do to fight for the rights of these women? How can we make a difference for them???
@humanrightswatch As I understand it. they've closed down even all-women universities. It's mainly the mad old guard that are dragging the country down. It will end as it's going to end in Iran, the women will explode and the younger men will join them.
@humanrightswatch making women the enemy just shows their weakness as men. Fk them.

@humanrightswatch

What a society that disallows creativity, intelligence, curiosity and exploration. Servitude and death is not a life.

@humanrightswatch They think they are doing something official by signing papers. They will learn that freedom and the right to education cannot be hindered. No country that abused religion and tried to make policy on religion was permanent.
@humanrightswatch
yes, this is awful. They said they wouldn’t do this but they have. I stand in solidarity with the women of Afghanistan. Their lives are gradually being degraded. We must let them know we are with them in.

@humanrightswatch
Who didn't know that this was going to happen raise your hand.

Anyone?

@humanrightswatch
Women are no longer allowed to have anything more than an elementary school education! That is so WRONG! 🥺😥
@humanrightswatch this is where quote message is really missed: so, so many words needed in front of this news. 🙇‍♀️
@humanrightswatch This is the future of Florida and Texas. Religious extremists need to be eliminated.
@humanrightswatch this is really sad but expected imo
@humanrightswatch Taliban men will die because Afghani women were not allowed to become doctors. Taliban children will starve because Aghani women were not allowed to study agricultural science. Taliban government will fall because Afghani women were not allowed to become envoys and diplomats and political science experts to integrate Afghanistan into world markets and societies. Despair of old will be new again. And again.
@humanrightswatch the taliban not attacking women's rights challenge (impossible)

@humanrightswatch Mostly Joking comment follows.

This is how ugly men get to have sex without alcohol.

The Whole of evolution has dictated that ugly men need to stop women from making a better choice or any choice in fact, which would naturally be a better choice.

@humanrightswatch Is there any way to save Afghanistan from itself? I don't think so. And the practical use of reason will never be...democracy will never again shine upon its people.
Just an observation.
@humanrightswatch weak men need uneducated women.
@humanrightswatch I don't see the benefit of keeping women out of education for any country. Every country needs home-grown teachers, doctors, builders, pharmacists, engeniers... What is the endegame with this stupid measure? To be forever a developing country, forever dependend on foreign aid without the means to build something of their own? Wasting half the countries potential?
@humanrightswatch limiting or eroding education is a key tool for oppressors. It’s so sad that we continue to let it happen and an abomination that it’s done under the guise of God.
@humanrightswatch Women are now also banned from working for NGOs.
