Have you made your plans for NYE? Is someone counting on you, the introvert, to make plans to go out for NYE? This is your gentle reminder… here are some last minute ideas from me, the hobbyist travel agent:

  • Travel for work? Book a hotel with a view of fireworks using your hotel points. Guaranteed winner, especially if you can make brunch reservations and they have a restaurant and bar nearby.
  • The event timeline in Google will give you a list of parties in your metro area on NYE, (ie: “NYE parties Chicago”), but avoid anything sponsored by a big radio company, a famous hotel chain, or big liquor company, it’s guaranteed to be a pretentious shitshow 💯💯💯 with nowhere to sit if you’re not VIP. Actually, be careful of any big event with expensive VIP.
  • All the things you do team building events at probably have a party. If it was fun then it might possibly be fun now…
  • If you are in a metro area there’s probably a theme party for every decade, music style, and subculture.
  • Read what you get for a party ticket carefully. You probably shouldn’t be paying more than $120/pp in a metro area for the typical well drinks, apps, and champagne. If it’s more, check what that gets you (and doesn’t) - maybe better entertainment or location?
  • Make a plan of how the hell you’re going to get there and get home, or where you’re going to stay overnight. If you’re not in a small town, ride share surge pricing will be ludicrous. That’s probably not a great option and the roads won’t be super safe.
  • Pick something you and your party will be comfortable with the dress code for all night, including the shoes. Conversely, be aware if people in your party want to dress up and you’re planning something too casual. That includes masking and unmasking to eat and drink, for folks still doing it.
  • if it involves drinking, plan how you’ll hydrate and bring your painkillers. Know where your stuff is. Watch your drinks. Have someone DD if needed.

Good luck, stop procrastinating, and go make those plans!

@hacks4pancakes you are quickly becoming the fediverse life coach.
@jerry I’m the universe’s life coach, it feels like sometimes.
@hacks4pancakes personally, my plan is to stay home and not help spread COVID or get it myself.
@jik okay, this isn’t a post meant to help your situation.
@hacks4pancakes
Have you read (or at least seen the movie of) The Accidental Tourist?
@RealGene not normally my kind of film, did you enjoy it?

@hacks4pancakes
I loved the book, and the movie did a good job of not ruining it.

The Thanksgiving dinner scene is a classic.

I'm biased by being culturally stuck in the 1980's…

This is extremely well considered. Thank you.

* Gentle reminder that attending an in-person crowded New Years Eve party, even if out doors, is a great way to (re)catch COVID-19 Omicron variants.

@hacks4pancakes I haven’t even finished making saternalia plans yet.
@hacks4pancakes I usually go up to the cabin and have a little campfire, recollect about the revolution around the sun I just made, enjoy some time with family. Sitting in the cold at midnight by a campfire is truly a way to start a new year. 🏕️🔥
@hacks4pancakes not 100% guaranteed tips but if you find yourself getting horrendous surge pricing try swapping to Uber Black/Limo (i once got home in a Jag for 1/4 the cost of an UberX) or walk a few blocks from the busy part of downtown with your friends (great time to buy/have water+electrolytes) and then try again.
