#GeoHashtags #LocationLabels

Already start following the group to keep in touch, expect a more complete writeup #soon!

The idea is to set up a community that popularizes the idea of tagging location related things with #LocationLabels (#geo + the first 6 digits of your #PlusCode #OLC, tool available at https://whenwhere.cf) so you can start following labels around you and discover new things, activities and friends, and figure out things to do and people to meet when you go to new places!

For the planned writeup, please send your questions about this my way and invite people to join the community!

whenwhere.cf - Dead simple lightweight communication and coordination

@lapingvino I was messing with whenwhere once in a context where location sharing was way off (sometimes geolocation decides I'm in another state for some reason) and I couldn't figure out how to use it *without* being dependent on location sharing. Like where can I enter an address and get a plus code in that format?

@locationlabels

@spacewizard @locationlabels usually I then simply go to plus.codes/map, fill in the location and take the first 6 digits manually. I agree it would be nice to have a non-google tool for that as well...
@spacewizard @locationlabels sites like mapy.cz and apps like osmand also have full code support so you can use those as well :)
@lapingvino I guess I don't understand how to chop up plus codes @locationlabels

@spacewizard @locationlabels Just an example on plus.codes

When you search for any location, you get the short code on top, open up the window and you see the long code underneath: 8FW4V75V+8Q

To create a #LocationLabel out of this, you just put #geo plus the first 6 digits of this long code: #geo8fw4v7

If you want to figure out around where this code is, you can reverse it by padding with zeroes and adding a plus: https://plus.codes/8fw4v700+

Plus codes

Plus codes are short codes for locations, for places that don't have their own street address.

@lapingvino Ah, thanks. I would not have figured that out without having it spelled out for me. Seems wildly unlikely another Mastodonian is in the same 6-digit geocode as me.
@spacewizard true, but you can automatically search several codes in a region, because it's computable. also to increase the range especially early days, you can shorten the code to 2 or 4 digits.
@lapingvino sure, but it won't work to search for incomplete hashtags on Mastodon will it?
@spacewizard actually turns out Mastodon does partial hashtag searches!
