Families & individuals on the spectrum handle our surroundings slightly different than our NT peers. We have a variety of sensory aversions (food textures, noise tolerance/light tolerance issues, etc).
When a family has multiple members on various parts of the spectrum - we can have conflicting needs.
We’re not trying to be assholes, we’re trying to get by…
You all know someone on the spectrum - please work with us during the holidays.
Promise, we’re trying our best.

@Karenlynn I've been thinking about this all day. I have similar issues, and spend way too much energy in my defensive crouch. Your approach has so much more grace -- thank you for writing this!
@jecm it’s something we deal with every year. Interaction with others, “holiday spirit”, fireworks & “celebrations”, etc. is just not tolerated or even possible for all of us. We don’t live in a hallmark card. That all said (I’ve had to learn this too) being defensive is horribly exhausting, especially when you are trying to explain the reality of neurodivergence & sensory overload to friends & family. Please have a safe & sane season. (We’re all in this together) #asd #holidays #autism #adhd
