30 years ago, I was finally getting my first look into the real world of ops at RAF Chicksands after several weeks on casual status (working from a trailer outside "the building" on "the hill" at the base). I'll never forget walking onto the ops floor the first time & being completely flabbergasted by what would soon become obsolete tech. I still had training to do before starting work as a #MorseCode op, but let me tell you, that was no doubt the beginning of some very strange tales. #KE0FFT
@KE0FFT Wow, I've just looked up Chicksands and read about the HF direction finding antenna. Very interesting!
@g0dbi the #FLR9 / “#ElephantCage” was really a technological marvel back in it’s heyday (1960’s-ish), and still was very useful for us in the 90’s. There is an excellent recent video here that covers the mission it was involved in back in the day and the evolution of the Morse op career field up to the present. ~ https://youtu.be/uh88Y2_33GI
