If I get my account back, will I stay on Twitter? Unless Elon Musk makes a dramatic course change, I don't know why anyone—journalist or otherwise—would feel comfortable investing a single tweet into the hands of this volatile totalitarian. I won't delete my Twitter account, but Mastodon is home going forward.
@tony I deleted my Twitter account today. I’ve had enough of that guy…
@tony Don’t ask any of us to come back with them if they can’t stop their addiction. Twitter is ruining journalism.
@JJPeterson @tony It is, and that's why I hope Elno bans them all. A journalist friend told me that their employer requires them to be on Twitter. These news outlets *are* addicted. It's time for them to go cold turkey. We'll all be better off for it.
@DancesWithCybermen @JJPeterson @tony Let’s hope these “news outlets” grow a spine. Watching them lean rightward and not call lies and sedition for what they are these last several years doesn’t give me much hope. They love their totalitarianism.
@tony I went on today and was surprised how toxic every reply was to me. I am a nobody with a handful of followers and was attacked non stop.
@tony
Narcissists are like that...
@tony you should def delete your account.
@tony My sentiments exactly
@tony I just wish we could have seen all this coming somehow!
@tony I could not agree more. He does not deserve the traffic that many of you generate
@tony The only reason I didn't delete was to prevent handle-jacking. I don't use Twitter at all anymore.

@travellovewine @DancesWithCybermen @tony Same. I moved out!

Emptied all contents, including ad preferences. Locked down w/2FA authenticator, and abandoned.

@DancesWithCybermen @tony I still use it mostly to talk shit about that fucking muskrat.

@tony

A content investor, that's new!

I always wondered why all of you create content for free but it turns out you where investors.

interesting

@tony honestly the ban of the journalist was fir me the straw that broke the camels back. I have enough of that Clown Fiesta.
Let's Hear From the 2 MN Journalists Elon Musk Just Banned From Twitter - Racket

Two Minnesota-connected journalists—Aaron Rupar and Tony Webster—on being subjected to the demented whims of a megalomaniac oligarch.

Racket
@tony All of my tweets on Twitter are attempts to reconnect with folks I know over there. I'm not even paying much attempt to the general timeline. I'm keeping my account there simply so I can have a birds-eye view of Twitter's destruction.
@tony the social contract between the publishing platform and the profession of journalism has been violated. There is no trust to be had that if Elon got another wild hare up his rear, that he wouldn't lash out in another tantrum like this one. He blew it. Now the extinction of Twitter looms.
@tony Anyone who creates content for Twitter is saying they're ok with Musk.
@tony Same here. Not banned, but Mastodon is home.
@tony Nice to have you here, Tony. 👋 😀
@tony Don't journalists facing a real conundrum in their perception that they might lose their audience if they give up the bird?
Also a company decision for their employers?
@tony welcome@to the party!
@tony It is a numbers game. I do not want to super inflate their egos any further with even my assumed presence.
@tony
If journalists do get their accounts back they will basically be in an abusive relationship. Musk is already checking off lots of the boxes: insults & other psychological/emotional abuse, monitoring & limiting behavior/speech, threats to economic security, indirect threats of physical violence, etc.
Abusers test boundaries. And they almost always escalate
@tony
Honestly, I don’t know what journalists are supposed to do. It’s not their fault (no victim blaming). You/they are also trying to deal with a bad job market, the need for access to followers and contacts, possibly contractural requirements, maybe toxic work situations, and other stuff I don’t know about.
How can journalists be protected?
@tony this is my exact outlook. I see no reason whatsoever to reactivate my Twitter account
@tony My only reason for staying on Twitter now is to encourage people to migrate over.
@tony one if the main reasons a lot of people, journalists especially, used twitter is that's where everyone was so it's where the best reach was. Do you think that's going away, and do you think fediverse will be good enough in that respect for your needs? Or are you on these sites for different reasons?
@tony I've been on Twitter about 3 years, since he took over I've hardly had any likes or re-tweets for original posts, only replies. I've been on Mastodon a couple of months.
Yesterday I made a few identical posts on Mastodon and Twitter. Lots of likes and shares on Mastodon, none on Twitter.
If anyone is worried about losing visibility by moving, don't be!
@tony thank you for standing for something. I've wanted to leave Twitter since musk took over but stayed for the journalist I follow. Since everyone is here now.. I have no reason to return.
@tony thank you for choosing Mastodon. I know so many are choosing Post, but mastodon just feels right to me. Post feels like a product.

@tony Musk continues to describe Twitter as a tech company. Which is a demonstration of how little he understands what he acquired. Its a social network (not social 'media'), its value is it's people and the content they provide. Stephen King was correct to state that Twitter should be paying him.

Every person who leaves reduces Twitters value.

@tony Pissy ex billionaire can’t make friends at his own party and now he is throwing a temper tantrum revealing once and for all that he had no clue what FREE SPEECH really means.
@tony You can mirror back to Twitter from here if you have to post there.

@tony

I actually do suggest deleting your Twitter account.

Didn't your mother ever tell you to never play with Fascists?

@tony Your tweets are your content. Burn the earth.

@tony
"I won't delete my Twitter account, but Mastodon is home going forward." Same here.

#musk floated 'reclaiming' handles last week. The context: "underused or abandoned profiles." (At least that's what I recall.)

In the moment I remember also understanding it's not far from underused to defining abused and redacting people. He may do it for us.

Just another way of banning folks.

@tony Good. Hope your are starting a trend.
@tony
Thank you. I saw all the calls from management for reinstatement of accounts and wondered why they would want to continue using the platform.
As content creators, Elmo needs journalists / news outlets more than they (you) need him.
@tony It is undignified to have people go TO TWITTER to read one's words That's MY opinion.
@tony If people changed the CW to something shorter and more accurate when replying, it would make the replies a lot easier to read. At present, everyone's saying they often get interviewed and always get asked that question . . .
@timtfj sorry, I have no idea how Mastodon works and I’m still learning!
@tony It was a comment to those replying, really! I thought what you did was fine :-)
@tony I don’t want to give megalomaniac musk any more of my business

@tony

This is the smart move.

Anyone who goes back to the fowl site now basically agrees to play by the oligarch's rules, which will change at the oligarch's sole discretion. And he knows that those who come back come back knowing that, so he will only treat them worse next time.

@tony You are the reason Twitter existed, you and all who posted content that other people wanted to see. How fucking dare the Tyrant of Twitter deem who is worthy and who isn’t. Just because he finds common cause with Nazis & fascists & Russia/Putin, that doesn’t mean we do — we used & enjoyed Twitter *in spite* of the right wing hate-sewage, not because of it.
