Musings on growing up as an #AltBlackGirl

I listened to mostly rock and new wave music growing up. It drove me crazy when my family would make fun of my for listening to yt music. Like, you sent me to a school that I was 1/3 of the black student population, you let me watch way too much Mtv (this was back when they actually played music all day kids), & y'all don't play music at home. Fuck did you think was gonna happen?

White people didn't invent nor do they own rock music (Country music neither actually). Which is why my #sotd for #BlackFriday is brought to you by Bad Brains.

Big Take Over

@mellifera Music is universal and color blind. I took my little brother to a Rap festival in Dallas, TX when he was 8 or nine and I was 16 or 17. We saw Ice-T, Kool Moe Dee and so many others and we loved it. We were the white rice in the pepper jar and NOBODY cared. We were there to sing and dance and enjoy and everyone was cool with it. On a side note, there have always been Black artists doing Punk and New Wave and every other form of music (see A Band Called Death for one of my favs), but they seldom hit big because of myopic music labels that are nowhere near as color blind as concert
audiences.
@mellifera Bad Brains!!! I still remember seeing a video of theirs when i was a kid ... don't recall which one, maybe I Against I ... but i definitely recall the effect it had on me. I had never seen anything like that before. They were amazing.
@mellifera They are absolutely astounding and it makes me sad that more people don't know about them. I saw them once, when they had the replacement for HR. It was... all hardcore shows can be insane, this was... deranged. Stage dives from a second floor balcony, basically no breaks between songs, they played .. everything. And, for once, it was a super diverse crowd.
@mellifera Youโ€™re telling my story, too. I LOVE Bad Brains
@mellifera One of my all time faves and so freaking influential for so many bands that followed.

I was a metal head until 10th grade. Then I met the most beautiful girl with a mohawk from the big city and she turned me on to Bad Brains... Minor Threat... Suicidal Tendencies and a bunch more... Pretty much turned in to a punk overnight.

@mellifera

If you look back punk came out of ska in England... they both rose side by side and intertwined. Americans took it and made hardcore and took it to another level... But the color of your skin was never a concern for any of us. If it was, you became a skinhead and we then got in to a lot of fights with you... lol

@mellifera Bad Brains are so damned good!!! One of my favorite of all time punk bands! So tight, fast and political! ๐Ÿ‘
@mellifera "Why must the rich man keep on hording all the money? I and [...] I survive!" Love Bad brains. Bad brains opened my mind to the best punk an a whole new connection with Reggae because of their brilliant range and contrast.
@mellifera *Love* Bad Brains! When I saw Rollins on his spoken word tour he reckoned HR was the best front an he'd ever seen. There's nothing in the music to disbelieve that!
@mellifera as a British #AltBlackGirl london rich alt ๐Ÿ–ค scene in late 90s/2000s was so isolating and just horrific when ever I left the city & dared to attend gigs/festivals which I did alot. Its always a bore having to recite the black influence + origin to both black & white folks who argue its white music like that means anything, particularly in the UK.
Things are getting better. GenZ lot seem to be marrying both their rich Brit/African heritage with alternative music & it's a joy to see.
