Mastodon is what you make it!

Don't want to see something? Filter it.

Want to be kind to people who are struggling? Put a Content Warning on it.

Want others to see something cool? Boost it.

Don't like who someone is or what they represent? Block them.

Tired of seeing boosts? Turn it off!

Want more people to follow you? Engage!

Don't want anyone following you without asking? Lock your shit down!

With Mastodon you can either break your bubble or create your own. It's up to you!

Let's go!

@Mrfunkedude How does one turn off boosts? I didn’t even realize that was a thing.

@Twizznit two ways...

You can either go to a specific profile and select the 3 dots next to the bell icon and select "hide boosts from" or you can go to the top of your HOME column and deselect "Show Boosts" from the settings icon to get rid of all of the boosts in your Home timeline.

@Mrfunkedude @Twizznit is there any way to do this and get the boosts into a list? I want to prioritize what my friends say, but I don’t want to miss what they boost entirely. :/

@Kyrielle @Twizznit I have no idea.

Maybe one of my followers knows?

@Mrfunkedude Hmm. Thank you for those tips. They don’t appear to be options that are available on the mobile app, though.
@Twizznit yeah, honestly, the official mobile app kind of sucks. You might want to play around with third party apps, and see which one works best for you. I never recommend the official app.
@Mrfunkedude I've just discovered filters, so now I don't see any more cross posted RTs from that site. Phew.
@MostlyTato
Oh do tell, I have found my way to filters, but, did you just filter the word "Twitter"?
@PariMoonForest I just filtered @twitter.com to stop cross posted material. You could filter 'RT' to stop retweets that have been cross posted, or you could filter 'twitter' to stop anything that mentions the site. Depends how specific you want to be.
@MostlyTato
Ah thank you! Yeah I did one for "Twitter". But I actually haven't seen a huge amount...Maybe a few screen shots...but I think we will all settle down as we get comfy here.
I'm so glad that Mastodon (and the platform predecessors, admins, etc) exist!
@Mrfunkedude You always harvest what you plant... It is valid as well for social media. Toxic content will bring you toxic time.
@nicole2g
Bit like life, you get back what you put in... with a bit of luck. Brilliantly more educational & less confrontational.
@Mrfunkedude

@MiguelSmizSuarez @Mrfunkedude as i like to say, too much talking not enough doing.

I talk about how to make compost to help create beautiful garden.

@Mrfunkedude I'm still confused on when to use the favorite button though...
@asdfdelta use it whenever you want to let the content creator know that you liked their post. That’s all it does. Remember, there’s no algorithm here. The only way to help someone’s post to be seen by others, is to boost it.

@Mrfunkedude Which I really enjoy, actually. Atleast so far.

But it seems favorites really aren't used a lot, maybe it's a paradigm shift that hasn't happened to me yet

@asdfdelta I get about twice as many favorites on my content as I do boosts. I think it's because that everyone who boosts, will also favorite, and the rest are those who just favorite.
@Mrfunkedude I’ve found this in the 6 weeks I’ve been here, it’s so refreshing to be able to build your own content! I think I had nearly everything muted or blocked in the other place but even then the unwanted made their little troll like way through. Here I can read all the political posts I want AND read the comments, and get absorbed in others interesting and educated thoughts. Then post my birds 😁
@GreenishFinger @Mrfunkedude
That's so true. I enjoy it here much more.
@Mrfunkedude
Good stuff, and appreciated, especially from me, being new. I'm mostly on the phone app. It seems like posts, likes, etc ate coming at me from all sides. So I apologize if I miss a needed reply. I'm not coming from twitter, never used it. I've been weaning off fb, even if family, etc don't follow. The bright side is,vmaybe I'll connect with new folks, and probably more interesting! So, back to you're post. There's quite a bit of terms and functions unknown to me. Is there a FAQ some where perhaps?

@mawil1013 You are VERY welcome!

First, I don't recommend the official Mastodon app. It has missing features that haven't been implemented into the app yet.

If you're on Iphone I suggest Tooot (not Toot)

I don't use Android but I see a lot of people recommend Tusky.

Lastly, I suggest checking out https://fedi.tips to help you get some of the terms we use around here.

Hope that helps!

I'm using fedilab, is that a good one?
