We're going to do a part 2 of our Gone but Not Forgotten series on AppStories right after our annual holiday break.

What apps do you miss from the early days of the App Store?

I'd love to get some listener favorites to share during the episode

@jvoorhees Not super early, but I think about Instacast a LOT. Byline and Verbs IM client also come to mind.
@boateng @jvoorhees Oh yes, I remember being so impressed with the UI/UXstyle of Verbs at that time.
@boateng @jvoorhees damn, yeah, instacast was great
@jvoorhees I can't seem to recall the name but there was a strategy game with large areas of hexagons I loved. Early-early days, iShoot was a classic.
@sdw o! I think I know the game you’re talking about 🤔
‎Strategery

‎Strategery is a fast-paced game of world domination, designed and built from top to bottom for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Play against the computer or your friends in an epic battle of strategy and risk. It's an App Store oldie but a goodie (check out the reviews). Macworld's 2009 App Gems A…

App Store
@philviso @jvoorhees omg that is it! thank you!!!
@jvoorhees
Let's Golf! from Gameloft.
Infinity Blade from Epic
@jvoorhees I miss the clever apps that abounded early on the store that used the sensors in the app (screen, orientation, etc) to simulate real-world activities - the lightsaber app, the 'pouring a beer' app using the phone's motion sensor, and perhaps most of all - the bubble wrap app which encouraged you to pop little virtual bubbles on screen. I expect if any of those still exist, I'd have to buy gems or something in an in-app purchase to get them to work!
@jvoorhees Oh and the 10,000+ flashlight apps all Sherlocked.

@MattGallagher @jvoorhees The lightsaber app from The Force Unleashed was great. I was so bummed when that stopped working.

I remember another app called Melodica that was a dead simple music sequencer. It’s still on my original iPhone. Sometimes I boot it up just to play around with the app.

@jvoorhees ibeer!

But really Mailbox, Sparrow, and of course Twitter.

@ChrisLawley @jvoorhees +1 to Sparrow and Mailbox. Email clients on the mac really do have a sad track record.

I'm using Spark today but my intuition tells me it's going to be joining this list.

@jvoorhees I like going to App Store > Account > Purchased > Not on this iPhone, and scroll to the bottom, from time to time 🥲 I hate to think Facebook was the very first iPhone app I have ever downloaded.
@jvoorhees Tweetie, Mailbox, Path come to mind.
@jvoorhees dark sky. Weather has gotten better, but it’s still missing something
@jvoorhees Unpleasant Horse was a hilarious and really challenging game that I remember was the result of something like a weekend hackathon at 4th and Battery. I wish it still worked, but when Popcap sold, I think it was a casualty.
@jvoorhees Flight Control. Such a tight package of a game.
@jvoorhees @viticci Tap Tap Revenge. You’d think a quality replacement would appear, but it hasn’t yet. I’ve not seen local two-player in a rhythm game since.
@jvoorhees Labyrinth, Rolando, and Dark Nebula we’re some great games.
@jvoorhees robot unicorn attack was delightful https://youtube.com/watch?v=bdeg2YaUYZo

@jvoorhees Most of them were/are 32 bit games. Wishing for old things to come back isn’t always the best although I’d like my knees back …
@jvoorhees Tap Tap Revenge, Flight Control, Evernote, Papi Jump, Sketches, Touch Hockey, Target Tap, Rolando
@jvoorhees Ramp Champ!! Was an amazing Skee Ball game with a really unique style. https://design.iconfactory.com/ramp-champ-for-ios/
Ramp Champ for iOS • Iconfactory Portfolio

We partnered with DS Media Labs to create a new twist on the classic boardwalk games skee-ball and pinball for iOS. The Iconfactory was involved in most every aspect of the game creation including user interface design, design of all themes, backgrounds, icons and prizes. We also designed all the promotional materials around the app including the app’s webpage. @jvoorhees does Google Reader and the apps that were powered by it count? I remember Mr. Reader being a sharp iPad app supporting it.
@jvoorhees oh! The old version of Urbanspoon where you could shake to get a restaurant recommendation. I remember seeing an Apple ad showcasing that, and realizing I needed an iPhone in my life.
@jvoorhees my wife and I loved using the Couple app (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Couple_(app)). Sure it was cutesy, but it was just the two of us on their and the sticker packs they had were so good I wish I could buy them for IOS now.
Couple (app) - Wikipedia

@jvoorhees I miss when good quality games like Super Monkey Ball were a one time purchase of $9.99.

And I do miss Koi Pond, it was just soothing and so cool to run on my iPod touch. 🥲

@jvoorhees Put Things Off - the to-do app! Beautiful app. I miss it so much. I look up screenshots every couple of years. Bring it back! 😊
@jvoorhees Flight Control
Transmit for iOS (still working if you purchased it, but gradually breaking)
@jvoorhees Rdio and Zite. I have such fond memories of Rdio. It was the first music streaming service I ever used. Zite’s engine for categorizing and recommending articles was incredible.
@jvoorhees Instacast, Rdio, The Magazine, and I forget the name, but there was this game about the YouTube video of a monkey riding a pig… the soundtrack was so catchy 😂
@jvoorhees Rdio, Path, Verbs, Weather Dial, Alien Blue, Beejive IM, and Tweetie. And who could forget iPhone 4 Case Program! 😉
@jvoorhees I really miss the possibility to find a nice game in the AppStore that didn't require the purchase of in-app items to be playable. I hate the current model that feels like feeding a slot machine. So much better to pay a reasonable amount up front, IMO.
@jvoorhees Protube, Airvideo, Copied, Fastfeed
@jvoorhees not so early days but… Facebook Paper! It was a really bold and unconventional app. Never seen something like that ever since.
@jvoorhees Flight Control, Path, Carcassone and most of all the early block game where you rotated to rearrange the blocks to create different effects. What was that? It was two developers and they abandoned or sold it.
@jvoorhees Someone once made a game called “Top 3 Solitaire” with just the right card graphics. I’ve never found a suitable replacement.
Also I’m pretty sure I paid real money for the Monkey Island 1 & 2 remasters that will never be seen again on iOS/iPadOS. Thanks for nothing, LucasArts.
@jvoorhees I miss #friendfeed so much - such a great #socialmedia community of tech and media OGs
@susanbeebe @jvoorhees I agree. Friendfeed was awesome, User friendly and you know, gave you some feeling like belonging.
