It’s that time of year again. I will be posting my way through a #WhiskyAdvent calendar. Feel free to mute the hashtag or this post if you don’t care, I won’t be offended. This year it’s the That Boutiquey Whisky Company’s calendar. They’ve been putting out some spectacular looking stuff this year and I hope to see some of it in this calendar.

#WhiskyAdvent day 1: Glen Elgin 12 Year Old - Batch 5 (49.1%)
Bright and fruity on the nose. More fruit on the palate, very sweet and light and a little bit floral. A great start.

#Whisky #Advent #TastingNotes

#WhiskyAdvent day 2: Armorik 7 year, batch 1 (50%)

Malty and maybe a little fruit on the nose?
Fruit comes through on the palate with a nice chocolatey sweetness.

This is delicious!

#Whisky #Advent #TastingNotes

WhiskyAdvent Day 3: Islay #3 13 Year Old - Batch 4 (48.6%)

Peat smoke and maybe some salt on the nose? Peppery peat on the palate with a bit of a medicinal tinge. I like it but it’s not my favorite. I normally love me some Islay peat, but this one is a bit one-dimensional.

Just looked it up and it’s a bottling of Laphroaig, I can totally see that.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky

Whisky Advent Day 4: MacDuff 12 Year Old - Batch 5 (49.9%)

Light and fruity pear on the nose, but wow, the palate is not the lightweight I expected after sniffing. It comes on strong with more sweet pear combined with a nice spice hit, then that spice just hangs... Pretty good!

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #MacDuff

Added a little water to the MacDuff just for curiosity's sake.

It ends up a tad odd; I still get spice but only the high notes, that warm middle kinda disappeared a little, and the pear sweetness dropped back a bit too. Still good, but definitely better without the added water.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #MacDuff

Whisky Advent Day 5: Cambus 27 Year Old - Batch 10 (50.7%)

Vanilla with a cool sweetness on the nose. Sweet honey, more vanilla, and an almost Irish pot still grassiness to it, with just the tiniest bit of spice at the end. Really nice oily mouthfeel.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Cambus

Whisky Advent Day 6: Aberlour 9 Year Old - Batch 7 (49.6%)

Extremely light on the nose, just a touch of malt. Thick and sweet with a good amount of spice on the palate. Long lingering finish with a nice burn as it fades.

Not bad, but doesn’t jump out at me either.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Aberlour

It’s interesting to have this after literally doing a 6-dram Aberlour tasting with Dramfool a few weekends ago. This reminds me a bit of the younger ones we tried in the first part of the tasting — a fine, easy-drinking dram, but doesn’t quite grab me.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Aberlour

Whisky Advent Day 7: Teaninich 11 Year Old - Batch 2 (47.9%)

Another one that’s light on the nose, with a subtle sweetness. On the palate a nice burn, the sweetness becomes more pear-like. There’s plenty going on here, I’m just not good at picking out these notes apparently. :)

The long tail of flavor gives me a bit of a chocolate/dark caramel finish, it definitely gets more interesting as I let it sit on my tongue.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Teaninich

Whisky Advent Day 8: Longmorn 10 Year Old - Batch 3 (48.3%)

On the nose, a bit of citrus and pepper. On the palate more of that plus a touch of something I couldn’t place until I looked at some other reviews: mint.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Longmorn

Whisky Advent Day 9: Balblair 7 Year Old - Batch 1 (49.9%)

Very malty on the nose. Pepper and some kind of bitter note I can’t place on the palate. Not bad, definitely young.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Balblair

Whisky Advent Day 10: Heaven Hill Corn Whiskey 9 Year Old - Batch 1 (49.5%)

Sweet and corny on the nose. (Sorry)
Spicy and sweet on the palate, with just a bit of a chocolatey finish.

Water brings forward really strong butteriness, and a lot more fruit.

It’s rare that I like a whisky _with_ water more than without, but I liked this even more with a few drops.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #HeavenHill

Also it took until day 10 for me to realize I could just use That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s own label descriptions from their site for alt text. 😅

Whisky Advent Day 11: North British 30 Year Old - Batch 6 (50.1%)

This one’s pretty light on the nose, having a hard time picking anything out.
I’ve seen “banana” in notes before but never really gotten it. This one, however, I taste banana more than anything else, and then a nice bit of spice underneath. Maybe a touch of a furniture polish sort of aftertaste. Water mellows it a bit but doesn’t change too much.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #NorthBritish

Reading master of malt’s notes after the fact they say cinnamon and nutmeg for the spice and I can see it.

Both 10 & 11 were good in very different ways.

Whisky Advent Day 12: Säntis 10 Year Old - Batch 1 (51.4%)

On the nose, cool and sweet. Dark caramel and cherries on the palate, with just a little bit of spice. Wow, this is *rich* flavor, really digging it.

A Swiss whisky, aged in beer barrels, Pinot noir, and bourbon casks.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Säntis

Whisky Advent Day 13: Miltonduff 10 Year Old - Batch 7

Smells almost like a bourbon, oaky vanilla and sweetness. Sweet apple and spice on the palate.

I like this one a lot!

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Miltonduff

Whisky Advent Day 14: Millstone 4 Year Old - Batch 3 (49%)

Sweet and a little fruity on the nose. Red licorice and clove on the palate. The clove spice turns minty as it sits on my tongue.

Tasty, and really different.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Millstone

Whisky Advent Day 15: Islay #1 10 Year Old - Batch 4 (47.9%)

Smoke and a little fruit on the nose. Palate is a nice smoke and a little citrus maybe? Pretty tasty.

A search says this is a Caol Ila and I can see it.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #CaolIla #TBWC

Whisky Advent Day 16: Glengoyne 17 Year Old - Batch 1 (49.1%)

Really sweet, almost bourbon-like on the nose. Sweet and nutty on the palate, with just a touch of spice. I like this one.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Glengoyne

Whisky Advent Day 17: Irish Single Malt No. 2 15 Year Old (50.2%)

Pretty light on the nose, but delicious spice and a little fruit on the palate with a long lingering warmth. Lovely.

The places that usually know don’t know the distiller for this one. Guess it’s a mystery. :)

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Irish

Whisky Advent Day 18: Jura 20 Year Old - Batch 5 (48.2%)

Nose is a little malty. Vanilla and a little sweetness and something I can’t quite place, almost cake-like? Finishes with a nice little bit of spice. Yum.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Jura

Whisky Advent Day 19: Bourbon Whiskey #1 24 Year Old - Batch 1 (48%)

On the nose, vanilla sweet and oaky. Smells amazing. Brown sugar, spices, and a minty finish with a touch of chocolate.

Fantastic dram from an undisclosed distillery.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Whiskey #Bourbon

Whisky Advent Day 20: Speyburn 10 Year Old - Batch 3 (49.5%)

Citrus and some malty tones on the nose. More malt and vanilla on the palate, with a lingering tootsie-roll-like chocolate fade.

A very nice victory scotch for the Canes win tonight. ;)

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Speyburn #VictoryScotch

Whisky Advent Day 21: Irish Single Malt #1 13 Year Old - Batch 3

On the nose, sweet ripe fruit and maybe something floral? On the palate a little lemon and and a kind of minty spiciness, with more sweet notes but maybe less fruity than the nose suggested.

This is not my favorite style of whiskey but it is a fine example of the kind if it’s yours. :)

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Whiskey #IrishWhiskey

The Irish gets fruitier when I add water, but maybe a little more medicinal? Still not my style but I think I like it a bit more this way.

Whisky Advent Day 22: Whitlaw 15 Year Old - Batch 1 (49.7%)

On the nose, sweet vanilla, and maybe a little orange? On the palate, more vanilla and orange and a nice buzzy spice. Just a touch of smoke which I notice more in the finish than while drinking it.

Lovely.

Looked it up and Whitlaw is the name of the hills near Highland Park. Well played, TBWC. ;)

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Whitlaw #HighlandPark

Whisky Advent Day 23: Ledaig 11 Year Old - Batch 15 (48%)

Nice smoke on the nose. On the palate, more smoke and spice, and maybe the tiniest touch of citrus.

Tastes like a delicious campfire. :)

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Ledaig

Whisky Advent Day 24: Tomatin 36 Year Old - Batch 5 (46.8%)

On the nose, fruit and spice and everything nice. On the palate, just a ton of wonderful fruit and a warm lingering spice.

Truly wonderful, and a fantastic way to finish this set.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #Tomatin #TBWC

Whisky Advent Day 25 waitaminute what?

@Triluna got me a peaty advent calendar for Christmas so it can be whisky advent whenever I feel like it. 😅

I will not be posting regularly from this calendar, it starts to feel like a chore by the time I hit Christmas Eve. I will probably post about ones I especially like though.

#WhiskyAdvent #Whisky #BonusWhisky #WemyssMalts

LOL on Twitter a friend replied that I should mix them all together and do just one review. 😂

I replied:

“On the nose, peaty. On the palate, peaty.

I also get *extremely* subtle notes of citrus, lavender, leather, tobacco, red fruit, ripe banana, sea salt, Christmas cake, nuts, cloves, band-aids, beef Wellington, vanilla, hay, and malt.”

Only one of these is not a real tasting note that you see in whisky reviews, can you guess which one? 😈

Had this tonight from the peaty advent calendar, a Ledaig finished in Rioja (Spanish wine) casks. Delicious! Very fruity.

Adding water made the fruit notes more… fake? Kinda odd. Still not bad but much better without adding it.
