'And when (Caracalla) subdued the Germans, he called himself Germanicus, adding either in jest or in seriousness -- as he was an idiot and a madman -- that had he conquered the Lucanians he would call himself Lucanicus' (si Lucanos vicisset, Lucanicum se appellandum).
'Lucanica' was the name of a type of pork sausage (see Apicius 2.4).

I happened to have mentioned the parallel in my dissertation:
'Incidentally, this particular joke translates well into English: "When John Kennedy went to Berlin, he called himself a Berliner, adding either in jest or even in all seriousness ... that had he visited Frankfurt he would call himself a frankfurter." '
