@mastodonmigration How about some help for people. Like hashtag follow suggestions. Or at least something. It's not an easy user interface. And beyond that, it''s either No Work like Twt or Too Much work here. Isn't a happy medium possible?

@salliebecker While it looks like Twitter it is different in one major way. There is no algorithm. On Twitter everything you post and everything your read is examined by the software. It then tries to figure out what to present to you. This sounds great. You don't have to do anything. Unfortunately what Twitter presents to you is what it wants you to see in order to influence you.

@salliebecker Maybe just to buy stuff, but since Musk took over it's more to shape you into one of his minions. Here there is no algorithm. You define what you want to see. This requires a little more effort. People put hashtags in their posts and you can search for hashtags to see things you are interested in. Once you get used to it it works very well. You see much less stuff that you are not interested and was just intended to influence you.

@salliebecker But the payoff is that you see much more stuff that you really are interested in and find other people who share those interests. And no ads! If, say you are interested in #ClimateChange, then just add that hashtag to your Followed Hashtags. Then you will see every #ClimateChange post, and be able to reply to people with like interests and follow them. You will quickly find a community here. Just remember to use hashtags in your posts and follow hashtags.

@mastodonmigration

@salliebecker It's easy to say "follow some hashtags", but harder to find good tags. Not having an algorithm is a problem for new users, it's hard to fill up your feed and find people to follow. Mastodon almost needs a beginner feed, where you follow an account that introduces you to lots of interesting posts. Sure, there are lots of tips and lists, but I mean something that adds posts to your timeline. Mastodon.art solved this with a curator account ( @Curator ).

@mastodonmigration

@salliebecker If every subject had a curator, and it was easy to find and follow them, that would really help. For the moment, I don't think there's a good answer. We just have to tell people to follow a bunch of accounts and look for interesting things. Also, encourage everyone to use hashtags (which I'm not doing here! 🙄)

@kfarinsky @mastodonmigration @salliebecker

That’s a really good idea! That’s my main issue right now too but mostly because I don’t really know what exactly I’m looking for. I guess I could start with a generic #lol #hello or something haha

@Tea @kfarinsky @salliebecker Just look for anything you are interested in. Lots of people here seem to like #cats. Another favorite is #photography. Currently #christmas is big. This account has a list of the top 40 trending hashtags over the last six hours @top40hashtags

@mastodonmigration this is very helpful. Thanks 🙏
@digginjazz @mastodonmigration HUGELY HELPFUL! I figured out how to just have two servers and toggle between them and add as you go is much quicker than getting #thebird setup way back when I started there, also clueless. Seems a LOT of features you can’t find ARE AVAILABLE by using the web based app, rather than the app itself. Things look different but really ARE NOT THAT DIFFERENT. Familiarity will evolve quickly and experience will become much richer every day!
@mastodonmigration I dont see where I can search for people. Can you help with that please?
@DwntwnT @mastodonmigration welcome ! 🍍. Use “explore” 🔎
@mastodonmigration
Thanks from a brand new user! Glad I found your post haha I’m having some difficulty navigating through mastodon but that will hopefully be resolved by more exploration. We appreciate your help

@Tea No problem. The most important thing for newcomers to get used to is that because there is no algorithm feeding you content, you need to seek it out. Search for hashtags and follow accounts and other hashtags that you find this way. Always include hashtags in your post so that others can find you.

@mastodonmigration
Okay cool! That’s actually pretty great. Self-curated feeds is a huge step in the right direction. I can see many people fumbling with it like me since we are so used to being fed our content. #hashtags make the world go round
@mastodonmigration @Tea it’s a lot of #fun too! Never quite know where you’ll end up roaming

@mastodonmigration

Hey guys,
I would like to bring your attention to a tool we released last week, it allows composing threads naturally, so you don't have to manually reply to each toot.
It also allows scheduling your toots, hopefully things will make composing threads on par with Twitter

Schedule Posts on Mastodon! | Tweepsmap Blog

You're the first to get full functionality with threads, polls, media and more for Mastodon with a click. These tools will make it easier than ever to manage your social media presence on Mastodon, allowing you to schedule posts in advance and manage multiple accounts from a single interface.

@mastodonmigration i wish I could dislike posts. Not this one of course. Generally speaking.
@mastodonmigration Thanks for the tip. I misunderstood what lists are for on my first, quick, pass through the docs https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/network/#lists , so thanks for the impetus to give it a serious look.
