Dear #fedi (and #mastodon ) what do you feel about possible inclusion of options for #newsfeed #algorithms in the fedi, even if your instance doesnt choose to have one?

Boost for more data

Edit: we could also ignite a conversation on the reasons behind your opinion below or on your own profile :) helps with the nuance and could possibly help overcome sampling bias.

@edendestroyer I think it is important to consider the preferences of each and every user.

By that, I mean any user or instance should have the ability to opt out of being included in the algorithm's results. Better yet, it should be opt in.

Being able to configure and customize its behavior and results would also be great.

@edendestroyer
Don't we have that already? My fed feed (I think it was) became inundated with CNN bot (I assume it was a bot) posts. I mutes and blocked. If you're talking about that kind of stuff I want nothing to do with it. I'm here for the people, not organizations or businesses, advertising, etc.
@edendestroyer I’m not particularly fond of algorithms determining what I see. Call me old-fashioned, but I generally prefer a simple reverse chronological list of posts from people who I follow.
@edendestroyer There's really nothing wrong with an algorithm that basically says "based on your 'likes' you might find this interesting" what's wrong is the way that Google & Facebook have created algorithms that are intended to keep you on the site longer so you see more ads and the AI works out that showing increasingly extreme content is the best way to achieve this.

If someone releases a suitable add-in for Friendica, I might install it on my instance to see if it improves my experience.

What I would be opposed to would be the Mastodon approach where there is "One true AI" that the whole world has as its only option. The Fediverse is all about user freedom.
