I was having an interesting convo with a friend yesterday about the Netrunner CCG and about how it "died" when Wizrards decided not to make it anymore.

There are gaming companies that are still developing and making new unofficial sets and playtesting and releasing them to print, but since the game is "dead" nobody other than the company that owns it is going to complain, the community will actually celebrate it if the work was done well. If said makers were to get in legal trouble, they would get a cease and desist, they would stop, open up another company by another name and just start from zero again.

To me this is the best case scenario for any game. Games don't need markets to exist. Nothing needs a market t exist.
It only needs hearts to keep it living and growing.

@rotfarm there are multiple Creative Commons games which don't need to be in print to be playable. My favorite #ttrpg sare:

https://eclipsephase.com/ - transhuman sci-fi with a strong anarchist spin (and authors here on Mastodon)

https://www.ironswornrpg.com/licensing - a fantasy and sci-fi single player / co-op that doesn't require a GM and is VERY robust

https://wiki.rpg.net/index.php/Open_Game_Systems#Creative_Commons_licenses has quite a list! :)

I'd love to have a Solarpunk RPG with open rules! :)

Eclipse Phase - Eclipse Phase

Explore Eclipse Phase RPG, a sci-fi game where you can resleeve into new bodies, navigate AI-driven futures, and survive after Earth's fall. Create unique characters and join a community of engaged players.

Eclipse Phase - The Roleplaying Game of Transhuman Survival

@alxd I think it would be really cool, but I think needs to swing a little more fantasy than realistic, only cause you'd get into weird orientalism and cultural ignorance stuff if not done in the place where you currently are, but if you're building a whole world from scratch it would be great!

I think back to Adventure Zone Eathersea and how they just made up a whooooole world using The Quiet Year as their history for a concept they already wanted to start with. Solarpunk stuff could easily be done that way.

Hm.......I feel like creative commons and open source creative stuff really just needs more boosting in general in the public eye.

@rotfarm if you want some ideas for Solarpunk world without orientalism, you can check out the factions draft I wrote: https://alxd.org/solarpunk-rpg-factions.html

No need to orientalise, just show how different philosophies can clash!

Solarpunk RPG Factions Draft

Alto's Adventure concept Art CC-BY-SA 3.0 Ryan Cash When speaking to people about Solarpunk and browsing the Internet, quite often I encounter an interesting question: if you were to design a Solarpunk game, whether pen-and-paper RPG, a visual novel or something else, where should the conflict be? Should there be any factions? The world is supposed to be utopian, so where is any drama in that? I could write essays and books on this topic, but just as an example I wanted to show you a quick sketch of a faction system which could be used in a Solarpunk world / game. Each of the groups below should be distinct and internally varied, allowing opportunities for both alliances and conflicts in any combination. It's 2050. The impossible happened: we became carbon neutral and stopped actively decimating the ecosystems around the planet. Global warming is still in full swing, the oceans are out of balance, but we are not hurting the Earth anymore, we can start slowly healing it. The price of such a rapid change …

@alxd I am theeeere! also found you on stitcher, gonna binge on the way home from work! <3

@rotfarm You mean @SolarpunkPrompts ? Those are some great ideas for stories and games :) It's as mine as @tomasino 's! Please let us know which episodes you like the most!

Anyway, I would insist on Solarpunk being set in our future, not fantastical. There is place and value for fantasy exploring non-capitalist societies, but we badly need to imagine another tomorrow!

@alxd @SolarpunkPrompts @tomasino

I do agree with that more on the whole......

Ahhh. coming to this real time realization that I think I got caught up in this feeling that it's my responsibility somehow that others need to not commit colonial,racist reinforcements in their making of stories, It's just easier to do fantasy because it skirts needing to understand and learn the communities in your area to build the stories of a near future of your area.

RE: the podcast: of course I will!

@rotfarm The volunteer collective that makes Netrunner is on Mastodon (& I contribute a tiny bit). They are @NullSignalGames
@ginevra @NullSignalGames Yeah! I followed them immediately.That's what spawned the convo! :)
